Who are the MLB active players with the most All-Star selections?

The MLB All-Star Game has been a competition that baseball enthusiasts have looked forward to since it debuted in 1933, and in recent years the lineup has been chosen by way of voting by fans, players, and team managers.

This year’s Game introduces a new concept- that of legacy selections, where the league commissioner gives two players special recognition by naming them to a team.

The first recipients of this honor are Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers and Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals. The recognition is the perfect way to send off two great players who plan to retire soon, and also adds to the considerable number of All-Star selections they have already received.

These two heavy-hitters in fact top the list of current players who have been selected to this event.

Miguel Cabrera

Cabrera is the designated hitter for the Tigers, with whom he has been chosen to the All-Star Game eight times. He was first named to the All-Star team in 2004, when he was still with the Florida Marlins and played a role in their World Series win. He received the honor four years in a row until 2007, bringing his total to 12.

Albert Pujols

Like Cabrera, Pujols is a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame. The 42-year-old has been voted into the All-Star Game 11 times, 10 of them while he was with the Cardinals, and once while he was with the Los Angeles Angels in 2015. He and Cabrera are part of the super trio in the league who have the distinction of recording 3,000 hits, 500 home runs, and 600 doubles, along with the legendary Hank Aaron.

Yadier Molina

Molina has been a catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals throughout his whole MLB career. Since joining them in 2004, he has been selected 10 times to the All-Star Game. He played a major role in two of the World Series championships that the Cardinals won, and had twelve playoff appearances with them. He has won the Golden Glove award nine times, and is a four-time Platinum Glove awardee.

Mike Trout

The Los Angeles Angels center fielder has also been named to the All-Stars ten times. Considered to be one of the greatest baseball players in the past decade, Trout was the American League Most Valuable Player three times, and he has also won the Silver Slugger Award eight times. He is recognized as one the best players who are still active in the league.

Justin Verlander

Verlander is currently a starting pitcher for the Houston Astros, whom he helped win the World Series in 2017. The 39-year-old has been named to the All-Star team nine times, six of them while he was playing for the Detroit Tigers, who acquired him as the second overall pick in the 2004 MLB Draft. He has won the AL Cy Young Award two times, and was named AL MVP in 2011.

Clayton Kershaw

The left-handed pitcher has been with the Los Angeles Dodgers since they drafted him seventh overall in 2006. Kershaw made the All-Star Game a total of nine times- the first seven consecutively from 2011 to 2017, then in 2019 and 2022. He is a three-time NL Cy Young awardee, and was chosen as the NL Most Valuable Player in 2014.
