Why Nathan Eovaldi got the nod
Eovaldi remains one of the most reliable pitchers in the Rangers’ rotation and played a key role in the franchise’s recent success. The 2023 World Series standout is coming off an impressive 2025 season, finishing with an 11-3 record and a dominant 1.73 ERA.

His consistency and postseason pedigree made him the clear choice to open the season, even with another ace in the rotation.
What about Jacob deGrom?
While Jacob deGrom is also a top-tier option, the Rangers are expected to slot him just behind Eovaldi in the rotation. DeGrom is projected to start Saturday in the same series after a strong 2025 campaign in which he posted a 2.97 ERA and 12 wins.

A new era in Texas
The 2026 season marks a transition for the Rangers following the retirement of longtime manager Bruce Bochy. New manager Skip Schumaker takes over as the franchise looks to return to contention.
Bounce-back season ahead?
After winning the World Series in 2023, Texas has struggled to maintain that level, finishing 81-81 last season. Opening Day presents an early opportunity to reset expectations.
