Major League Baseball has seen it’s fair share of issues with domestic violence, and the issue is thrust once more to the forefront as New York Yankees relief pitcher Jimmy Cordero is suspended without pay for the remainder of the 2023 season.

While details of the incident itself are thin on the ground, Cordero has been suspended for the remaining 76 games of the season, effective immediately, under the league’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy.

Commissioner Rob Manfred announced the terms of the suspension on Wednesday and Cordero agreed to participate in a “confidential and comprehensive” evaluation and treatment program.

The Yankees issued the following statement:

“The Yankees are fully supportive of Major League Baseball’s investigative process and the disciplinary action applied to Jimmy Cordero. There is no justification for domestic violence, and we stand with the objectives, standards and enforcement of MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.”

The suspension sees Cordero handed the eighth-longest suspension in MLB history.

  1. Trevor Bauer, 194 games
  2. Sam Dyson, 162 games
  3. José Torres, 100 games
  4. Carlos Martínez, 85 games
  5. Odubel Herrera, 85 games
  6. Héctor Olivera, 82 games
  7. Domingo Germán, 81 games
  8. Jimmy Cordero, 76 games

The 31-year-old Cordero hails from the Dominican Republic and had a 3.86 ERA in 31 appearances, going 32.2 innings, giving up 14 runs on 25 hits, with 10 walks and 34 strikeouts.

Cordero is the third Yankee to be suspended under the policy, following Domingo German and Aroldis Chapman. With the pinstripes now down a reliever, they will need to call someone up from the minors. The timing of the suspension could make the trade deadline interesting if the Yankees decide to cast around the league for a replacement arm.
