Will the Yankees and Dodgers end up trading power hitters?

The headlines are full of speculation about how hard the Dodgers will chase Juan Soto, and in the hunt they may lose another big hitter to the Yankees.

The Yankees and Dodgers are in the middle of a heated offseason, each eyeing a power-hitting outfielder that could shape their respective futures. While the Yankees are pushing hard to re-sign Juan Soto, the Dodgers might emerge as a major contender, creating the possibility of a dramatic reshuffling of star sluggers.

The Yankees have made Soto their top priority, holding a detailed meeting with him and his agent Scott Boras to outline their vision for the future. Hal Steinbrenner called it “a very honest, back-and-forth dialogue” and emphasized how critical Soto was to their World Series run. The Yankees’ ownership group is reportedly ready to make Soto their highest-paid player if it helps them retain his bat in the Bronx, despite other free-agent needs in their pitching and infield.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers are reportedly interested in adding Soto as well, particularly since Teoscar Hernández, one of their key power hitters, is a free agent. Hernández, fresh off a resurgent season with a career-high 33 home runs, has expressed interest in staying in Los Angeles, but the Dodgers might prioritize Soto’s long-term potential over retaining Hernández. If Soto lands in LA, Hernández could become a prime target for the Yankees, who need a fallback if Soto leaves.

Both franchises face challenges. The Yankees’ biggest competitors for Soto include not only the Dodgers but also the Mets and Blue Jays, who have deep pockets and strong incentives to outbid New York. As for Hernández, his career consistency since 2019 makes him a valuable asset, but his price tag and the Dodgers’ aggressive plans could push him out of their lineup if they secure Soto or another marquee free agent.

Ultimately, the Yankees and Dodgers might not directly trade players, but their offseason moves could feel like a chess match, with each step influencing the other. Both teams are determined to bolster their rosters for another championship run, ensuring that the battle for baseball supremacy continues into the 2024 season.
