Yankees 3 - 6 Dodgers summary: stats, scores and highlights| 2024 MLB World Series Game 1

World Series Game 1: highlights

Everything in LA is a movie!!

This game had to end like this, with a bases loaded home run in the bottom of the 10 with two outs and your best player failing to make things happen. But here comes a guy who thought they could get out easily. That didn't stop Freddie Freeman from accepting the challenge. Ohtani failed to get a hit to make something happen. It was up to him to get the team there. In the best Hollywood fashion movie ending.

The game was dominated by the pitchers, who kept it nice and clean until the 6 inning, when the seams of the balls started to come out. Flaherty and Cole gave us a fantastic game until their arms gave out. Then the closing game wasn't great; multiple runs and many mistakes were made. A game where both teams seem to deserve to win.

One more out would have allowed the Yankees to survive. However, many would argue that they committed a minor lapse in concentration. The team needs to reflect on their actions and understand how they allowed a one-run lead in the bottom of the 10th with two outs to escape. The game exceeded all expectations of a World Series. Let's hope the next games will be as great.

Managers on both sides know exactly what’s at stake. Each is a chess player at heart, studying every move, every lineup tweak, looking for that one perfect play that could turn the game. But they also know the limit of strategy; sometimes, it’s all down to the raw, unpredictable talent of the game itself. One thing’s clear - the stakes couldn’t be higher, and they wouldn’t want it any other way. Both managers have made it clear: they’re here to fight, to win, and to send a message from Game 1.

There’s an electricity in the air - a buzz around the stadium that grows as fans pour in, filling seats with caps, jerseys, and the scent of popcorn and excitement. PITCHING

Los Angeles Dodgers: Jack Flaherty
The Dodgers have tapped Jack Flaherty to take the mound for Game 1 at Dodger Stadium. He’s a Southern California guy, born in Burbank, and a product of Harvard-Westlake, a high school known for turning out baseball talent. The Dodgers acquired Flaherty mid-season, and while his postseason stats this year haven’t exactly turned heads - he’s 1-2 with a 7.04 ERA - there’s no question he has the stuff to be dangerous. In a big game like this, anything can happen, and the Dodgers are counting on Flaherty to rise to the occasion in front of a home crowd.

New York Yankees: Gerrit Cole
Flaherty’s counterpart in Game 1, Gerrit Cole, also calls Southern California home. Cole grew up in Orange County, pitched for Orange Lutheran High School, and famously chose UCLA over an early shot at joining the Yankees after they drafted him out of high school. Now, he’s the Yankees’ ace, having cemented his legacy as one of the game’s best with a dominant season that earned him the American League Cy Young Award. He’s exactly who the Yankees want on the mound in the opener, with that cool, unflappable demeanor that makes it feel like he’s been built for moments like this. Cole has been lights out all season and could be the X-factor for the Yankees as they look to take Game 1 on the road.

WELCOME!!!

Welcome to the Diario AS USA live commentary of Game 1 of the 2024 World Series as the New York Yankees head out west to Dodger Stadium to face the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers and Yankees are gearing up for one of the most anticipated World Series matchups in decades. It's a rivalry that runs deep, one that’s spanned generations and even stirred excitement in the youngest of fans. Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman shared how even his 8-year-old son, Charlie, is caught up in the moment. “He’s on YouTube and seeing all the videos about Yankees-Dodgers. So you’re starting to get a hint of how big this could be,” Freeman said, beaming with pride.

This showdown marks the 12th time these two teams have met in the World Series, their last clash being 43 years ago. It all began back in 1941 when the Dodgers were still in Brooklyn, and Joe DiMaggio’s Yankees were on a tear, winning their fifth title in six years. Fast forward to today, and the stakes feel just as high, if not higher. The Yankees’ Juan Soto knows what it means. “You can be the best player. You can do whatever you want,” he said, “but at the end of the day, people remember you because you won a World Series.”

It’s true. Championships are what define legacies, especially when it comes to teams as globally recognized as the Yankees and Dodgers. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts summed it up: “You could easily argue that on a global scale, the Yankees and the Dodgers are the most followed, the most supported, the most visible.” And visibility is key. The League Championship Series shattered U.S. TV records since 2017, and the addition of Shohei Ohtani to the Dodgers roster has drawn viewers from Japan, further amplifying the spectacle.

This series isn’t just about a historic rivalry - it's loaded with star power. We’ve got five MVPs on the field: Ohtani, Freeman, and Mookie Betts for the Dodgers, and Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton for the Yankees. It’s the first time since 1971 that so many MVPs will face off in a single World Series. Even more impressive, Judge and Ohtani are likely to be named MVPs of their respective leagues this year. As if that wasn’t enough, both hit over 50 home runs this season, the first time a pair of such sluggers have gone head-to-head in the Fall Classic.

As the Dodgers chase their eighth title and second in five years, the Yankees look to end their 15-year championship drought. The Yankees’ last win came in 2009, and for Aaron Judge, the weight of that legacy isn’t lost on him. “This is where the real fun starts,” he said, fully aware that a World Series ring is what separates the good from the great in pinstripes. “They definitely got a different aura walking around here when you got a couple of rings on your fingers,” Judge added, reflecting on the Yankees legends who’ve come before him.

It’s not just about the present stars, though. There's a sense of history threading through the conversations around this series. Both managers, Dave Roberts and Aaron Boone, go way back to their college days, with a playful rivalry dating to when Roberts’ UCLA Bruins crushed Boone’s USC Trojans in 1992.

All this familiarity and history brings a certain energy to the dugouts.

The backdrop to all this? Dodger Stadium, shimmering under the California sun with its sea foam green and sky blue seats. It’s a picturesque setting for a series that promises high drama. And while the Dodgers and Yankees have both faced plenty of ups and downs to get here, it’s clear that this World Series is about more than just baseball. It's about legacies, old rivalries, and the memories made along the way.

Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner can certainly attest to that. He was just a boy when his father’s Yankees clinched the 1977 title over the Dodgers, Reggie Jackson hammering home the final blows. “I’d say my two most prevalent memories are Reggie’s third home run, and of course the final popup...and the pandemonium that ensued,” he recalled, his voice full of nostalgia. Those are the moments these players and fans are chasing now. Something unforgettable, something that stays with you forever.
