Yankees’ season ends early as Blue Jays prevail again
Toronto takes down New York in Game 4 to clinch the series and move on to the ALCS.
The Toronto Blue Jays have taken down the mighty New York Yankees, winning the American League Division Series and punching their ticket to the AL Championship Series. The Canadian team dominated Game 4 to seal the series 3-1, sending the Bronx Bombers home empty-handed once again.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. strikes early
As they did all series long, the Blue Jays wasted no time getting on the board. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. delivered the opening blow, ripping a single to right field that brought home George Springer, who had reached base off Yankees starter Cam Schlittler. Toronto led 1-0 after just one inning.
In the bottom of the third, the Yankees managed to even things up. Ryan McMahon crushed a solo homer to right field off reliever Mason Fluharty, who was the second pitcher used by Toronto in their bullpen game. That tied things at 1-1 heading into the fourth.
Blue Jays reclaim control
Toronto quickly regained the lead in the fifth after some sloppy defense from the Yankees. With runners on the corners, Springer lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Ernie Clement to tag up and score, putting the Blue Jays back in front 2-1.
Yankees’ mistakes prove costly
New York’s troubles continued in the seventh. A fielding error by Jazz Chisholm Jr. opened the door for Toronto to pile on more runs. With runners on second and third, Nathan Lunes hit a sharp single into the gap between center and left, and both Clement and Andrés Giménez scored to stretch the lead to 4-1.
The Blue Jays added another run in the eighth when Alejandro Kirk doubled and came around to score on a soft single from Myles Straw, making it 5-1. Yankee Stadium fell silent.
Judge’s late effort not enough
In the bottom of the ninth, Aaron Judge tried to spark a rally with a line drive to left field that brought home Jasson Domínguez to make it 5-2. But it was too little, too late. Cody Bellinger struck out with Judge on first, ending the game, and the Yankees’ season.
The Blue Jays now await the winner of the Seattle Mariners–Detroit Tigers series in the American League Championship Series.
