2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup second group stage format explained: games, previous results...
The FIBA World Cup 2023 Second-Round pairings are locked in, with 16 advancing teams now battling for the championship.
The 19th edition of FIBA’s premier event, the FIBA Basketball World Cup, is well underway, marking a significant milestone as it is being hosted across three nations: the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia. The tournament began on August 25 and will continue until September 10.
With the conclusion of the First Round, the 16 teams that have successfully advanced to the next stage of the competition and are now on the path toward the championship have been determined.
These 16 teams are as follows: the Dominican Republic, Italy, Lithuania, Montenegro, Germany, Australia, Canada, Latvia, Team USA, Spain, Serbia, Georgia, Brazil, Slovenia, Puerto Rico, and Greece. The upcoming Second Round games are scheduled to be held in Jakarta, Manila, and Okinawa.
These particular teams have risen as the top two performers from the initial phase of the tournament, where they competed within Groups A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H.

Second group stage format at the FIBA World Cup
These 16 teams will now be divided into four new groups, namely Groups I, J, K, and L.
It’s important to note that the outcomes of the three games played in the First Round will carry over to the Second Round. In this upcoming phase, each team will face the two teams they didn’t encounter in the First Round, resulting in a total of 16 games (2 games per team and 4 games per group).
The top two teams from each newly-formed group will qualify for the Quarter-Finals.
Contrarily, the teams that finish in the bottom two positions within each group will be eliminated from the title contention and ranked in places from 9 to 16.

Group I: Serbia, Dominican Republic, Italy and Puerto Rico
Group J: USA, Lithuania, Greece and Montenegro
Group K: Slovenia, Germany, Australia and Georgia
Group L: Canada, Spain, Brazil and Latv
The winners of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 will be awarded their championship titles at the Mall of Asia in Manila on September 10 as the tournament comes to a close.
