The NBA All-Star Game 2023 will take place on February, with fans, media and current players voting in LeBron James, fresh from breaking the all-time NBA scoring record, and Giannis Antetokounmpo in as team captains, the latter taking over from Kevin Durant, who did make the Eastern Conference team but isn’t expected to play because of a knee injury. We know the captains, but who are the coaches?
The coaches for the All-Star game are decided by the standings of the teams. NBA regulations also state that coaches who were chosen the year before are ruled out of the running for the current year.
Who will coach Team Giannis in the 2023 NBA All-Star game?
Boston Celtics interim coach Joe Mazzulla and his staff will take charge of Team Giannis after topping the Eastern Conference ahead of the Milwaukee Bucks before the All-Star break on 30 January. No team in the NBA has a better winning percentage than the Celtics in 2022-23 and that despite the fact that Mazzulla is in his first year as head coach.
The Celtics’ Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown will feature for Team Giannis, who may be without Kyrie Irving, who was due to play before being transferred from the Brooklyn Nets to the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference. The NBA has yet to comment on how that could affect the All-Star game.
Who will coach Team LeBron in the 2023 NBA All-Star game?
The Denver Nuggets ended January in first spot in the Western Conference, giving Michael Malone the chance to coach Team LeBron. Malone, who was also involved in 2019, will be able to call upon Nuggets center Nikola Jokić, who has been voted in for the fifth time in his career.
Like Durant on the opposing side, Stephen Curry was voted in and due to play but it looks as if a leg injury will keep him on the sidelines. Some speculation has led to suggestions that Irving, now technically a Western Conference player, could be named as Curry’s replacement, which would see Team Giannis forced to bring in an extra man.
When does the 2023 NBA All-Star game tip off?
The 72nd NBA All-Star 2023 Game will be held at the Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah. Tip-off is at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. P on Sunday, 19 Feburary.
