2023 NBA trade deadline, February 9th, summary

How the action on deadline day panned out, with the all trades taking place across the NBA.

NBA Trades: Summary of deadline day

The Mavs retain center Christian Wood for now

The Mavs’ market movement started and ended with Kyrie Irving. Christian Wood will stay in the paint in Dallas at least until the summer.

The Dallas Mavericks had already done their job in the trade market before the clock ran out. The trade for Kyrie Irving left them without two heavyweights on the roster, men who helped bring them to the conference finals last year; guard Spencer Dinwiddie and forward Dorian Finney-Smith.

The controversial Australian-born point guard clearly aspires to create a Herculean association with Luka Doncic, becoming a brand new star in the Texas firmament and throughout the NBA. But that is where it ends. There have been no more changes to the Mavs lineup over the final furlong of the transfer market, and that includes hanging onto Christian Wood, their key man on the inside.

Winners and losers

It is always a difficult one to talk about winners and losers in trade windows, but it is hard to imagine that the Lakers haven't improved with their roster moves. You have to feel that the Clippers, Suns, Bucks, and Rockets have likewise improved their situation.

The biggest losers in the deal had to be Miami and Chicago, mainly for making no moves at all, as well as the Wizards, Hornets, Raptors, and Blazers.

Several teams came out pretty much breaking even in the trade, notably the Sixers and the Pelicans.

Interesting strategy from Chicago

Lakers are in another league

The Lakers have been... uh... middling at best this season. Not a great squad.

Just when they thought that they had a way out, they got gazumped in the Kyrie Irving deal.

But they came into this trade deadline with a plan. And you know what? They made it work.

They unloaded Westbrook, Pat Bev and Thomas Bryant and added D-Lo, Malik Beasley, Jared Vando, and Mo Bamba.

You know what, LA? It is going to be all right.

The war of the leagues

Football by all accounts is the Nation's preferred sport and it goes without saying that the Super Bowl is the most watched game. On the other hand, the NBA's trade deadline is bringing with it all kinds of drama. So much so in fact, that some of the shine has been taken off the buildup to Sunday's big game in the NFL.

Will the Golden State Warriors make any trades before the trade deadline?

To hear the Warriors' head coach tell it, there won't be any moves made before the trade deadline. Indeed, the defending champions appear to believe they have all that's required to go the distance once again.

as.com

Ain't that the truth...

The Western Conference will have to be on its toes from now on with the arrival of two of the game's best. Like them or love them, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant are definitely stars of the game and their shock moves to the West are going to have seismic effects.

as.com

It really is!

It's been quite some time since we've seen so many high-progile players on the move and in all likelihood, we've not seen the last of it.

It's February 9th and with that, we'd like to welcome you to our live coverage here on AS USA of the NBA's trade deadline day.

We've already seen Kyrie Irving rock the league with a surprising move to the Dallas Mavericks, as well as the much sought after Myles Turner, who committed to the Indiana Pacers with a hefty extension. Then there was Kevin Durant's blockbuster move to the Phoenix Suns, which to be fair we're still trying to process.

Yet, it's fair to say there still a whole host of questions marks surrounding who will go, who will stay and of course for how much. Not the least of which, is the situation surrounding Russell Westbrook, Los Angeles Lakers and the Utah Jazz.

Be sure to check in with us through out the day as we'll be staying on top of just how it all breaks down as we head towards 3:00 p.m. ET when the door swings shut on trades in the NBA.

The Kevin Durant Effect

With Durant's huge move to the Suns, teams are already planning for how to deal with his arrival in the Western Confernce.

Will the Lakers make any more trades before the trade deadline?

The Lakers have found themselves in an awkward position, but there could yet be a way out.

The Spurs are securing their future

It would seem the Spurs aren't playing around with their prospects. With a significant amount of Draft capital, they've definitely assured themselves of two things going forward: A strong negotiating position and future assets regardless of if a move is made or not.
