Nick Nurse is still having to fiddle with the starting five in Joel Embiid's absence. Maxey is a staple in the first five, but Oubre Jr. was on the bench against the Bucks last game. He gets the the start tonight with recent tradee Buddy Hield, Tobias Harris and Paul Reed.
Joe Mazzulla has the luxury has the best starting five in the NBA, and it's shown over the first four months of the season. Tatum and Brown are the stars but they have the perfect compliments in Derrick White and Kristaps Porzingis on the offensive end while Jrue Holiday brings the edge on the defensive side of the ball.
Eastern Conference standings
Taking a look at the Eastern Conference standings coming into tonight, we see the C’s at the top of the table with the best record in the league. They are 7.5 games clear of the second placed Cavaliers who have jumped the Bucks and the Sixers in the last month. Philly was right behind the Celtics when they had Embiid, but as soon as he went down they started sinking down the standings and now find themselves in 5th place, but are 12 games back of 1st, and only a game and a half above the Magic who are in Play-In Position in 8th place.
The Sixers are set to play the best team in the league, and they will have to do it without the reigning MVP of the league. What's even more troubling for Philly, is they could be without Joel Embiid for longer than expected.
Next man up
With no Joel Embiid for the foreseeable future the Sixers need everyone to chip in a little extra. Nicolas Batum and Paul Reed are filling in underneath, but they aren’t going to be the ones to make up for the 35 points that are on the sidelines with Joel injured. Maxey is the top scorer after Embiid, but guys like Deanthony Melton and Kelly Oubre Jr. are the second options to score, and Buddy Hield is still getting acclimated after being traded to Philly earlier this month. The Sixers don’t need to be back to competing with the Celtics for the top spot in the East, but they do need to try to hold on to at least a top four spot until they get word on whether or not Embiid will return.
What can Brown do for you?
Jaylen Brown signed the most lucrative contract in NBA history this season after Boston threw cash his way to keep he and Jayson Tatum together as this team continues to chase the elusive 18th NBA championship. His stats are down from last year, but that may not necessarily be a bad thing. Tatum is still the top dog on this team, no matter whose bank account is bigger. With Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday joining the C’s in the offseason, that has taken some of the scoring burden off of both Brown and Tatum. He’s averaging 22.1 ppg, four and a half less than last year, but his shooting percentage is the best of his career and he is dishing more assists than ever.
Celtics last game
The Celtics went into New York for the latest edition of one of the top rivalries in the Eastern Conference over the weekend and rattled off their eight straight win. Jaylen Brown led the way with 30 points and 8 rebounds while Kristaps Porzingis had 22, 4 and 4 in a game that was tight until early in the second half. Boston stretched the lead out to 20 in the third quarter, and held the Knicks to under 20 points in the fourth quarter to win their fourth straight over NY this season.
Sixers last game
The Sixers hosted the Milwaukee Bucks and their former coach Doc Rivers over the weekend. Not surprisingly the Sixers struggles on the offensive end continued against a team that has been trying to get better on the defense. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 30 and Damian Lillard added 24 while Philly shot just 37% from the field and were held to 16 points in the final quarter in the Sixers 21 point loss. Tyrese Maxey led Philly with 24 points but didn’t get much help from his supporting cast.
We are live from Boston
Hello everyone and welcome to the Garden where the Celtics are back home after a quick road trip that saw them beat the Bulls and the Knicks in their return to action following the All-Star Break. Their win in the Big Apple was their eighth straight to help them stretch their lead in the East even more, and tonight they take on a sinking Sixers team that has been without Joel Embiid for the last month. They have won just four of their last 11 games without their MVP and have plummeted down the Eastern Conference. Tonight it’s not going to get any easier for Philly who will try to keep the C’s from winning their ninth straight.
