‘What ifs’ are always fun to imagine and even more so when it comes to elite sports like NBA basketball. On the other hand, given what we know about the star point guard’s past and present, one has to wonder what the future holds, especially following Miami’s NBA Finals defeat. Could there be a move on the cards?

Miami Heat made move for Kyrie Irving prior to Mavs acquiring him

According to reports, the Miami Heat made the Brooklyn Nets an offer for Kyrie Irving just before the trade deadline which saw him join the Dallas Mavericks. It’s understood that prior to February 9th, the day the trade window closed. To be fair, as surprising as the notion sounds it’s actually in keeping with the Heat’s stated strategy as they head into the postseason. Following their NBA Finals loss to the Denver Nuggets on Monday night, reports suggested that the Heat would look to sign a marquee player to reinforce the present roster. Indeed, reports suggested that the idea of acquiring Irving is something the franchise would be willing to “circle back on.”

“They’re going to explore seeing what the star market is out there. ...They made an offer to the Nets for Kyrie Irving at the deadline from what I’m told right before he got traded to the Mavericks,” stated the Athletic’s Shams Charania on Tuesday. “That just gives you an idea, I think there’s been some level of understanding that trying to get Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo just another piece that can take the load off, especially during the regular season, could be of importance. ...And the question is: Where do they go from here? Do they circle back on Kyrie Irving? ...This Heat team, they made a great run this postseason, they do feel like they might be one piece away with whatever star that could be at the guard position.”

Is a Kyrie Irving to Miami move plausible?

Here’s the thing: Miami has for some time been connected with a move for Irving. While it’s true that he’s reportedly trying to convince Lakers star LeBron James to Dallas, the reality is that with the Mavs likely being unable to pull off such a deal, the focus is now squarely on the fact that Irving is about to become a free agent. With that in mind, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he could end up in South Beach and even more so when considering that the Heat appear to have a need for a player such as the former Nets star. To be clear, free agency will commence on June 30th, at 6:00 p.m. ET.
