Best NBA free agents still available
There were some massive moves made in the first week after NBA free agent market opened, but there are still some good players up for grabs.
The heavy lifting in the free agent market has been done for about a week, but in the wake of the headline signings that shook the NBA, there are still some quality players available.
Lowry staying in Philly
Kyle Lowry just resigned with Philadelphia which will keep him in his home town for another year as the 76ers look to make a run at a long awaited championship. He is the most recent of the second wave of free agents to find a team, but there are still plenty of options available. Philly made the biggest splash in the free agent market, bringing in Paul George for a whopping $211 million dollars over the next four years.
The Sixers resigned Tyrese Maxey to a massive $200 million dollar contract, keeping Philly’s core of him and Joel Embiid together for the long term future. Philly shelled out two of the top three biggest contracts in the free agency period, and Lowry now brings them a little more depth and experience in the back court.
There were some shocking numbers being thrown around during free agency, but no one’s contract was worth more a year than George. LeBron James signed a deal that keeps him in LA for the next year, most likely two. James claimed he was willing to take a pay cut should the Lakers lure one of the top free agents to the Crypto.com Arena, but they failed to do so and he got a shade under a max deal at $50 million a year.
OG Aninoby signed the most lucrative deal when it comes to total cash, after signing a five year deal worth $212 million dollars. The stars of the market may be off the board, and there aren’t be any bank breaking deals on the horzion, but there are some valuable players still on the market.
Tyus Jones
It was only a couple years ago when many NBA experts were in love with Tyus Jones. He was backing up Ja Morant and got plenty of playing time with the legal and injury troubles Morant had been dealing with while Jones was there. Jones fell off the map after going to the NBA black hole that is the Washington Wizards, but he still dished 7.3 assists and scored 12 points per game on one of the worst teams in the league.
Spencer Dinwiddie
Dinwiddie’s production went way down after he was traded to the Lakers in the middle of the year. He’s 31 years old and can still be a valuable scorer for a team, but last year he averaged less than 7 points a game. It’s hard to blame Dinwiddie considering there weren’t many shots to go around once Anthony Davis and LeBron James took their nightly quote of shots. Just two years ago Dinwiddie was averaging 17.7 points a game with the Dallas Mavericks and if he finds the right fit, he could be a starter on a team that needs some scoring along the perimeter.
Patrick Beverley
The Pat Bev experiment didn’t quiet work out in Milwaukee and it doesn’t seem as though the Bucks are particularly interested in keeping him around. You know what you are getting when you bring in Patrick Beverley. He’s a dog on defense. He’s pest as an opponent. He knows how to get under people’s skin and every now and then he can heat up from downtown. Teams always need defense and a bit of veteran leadership, and Beverley can provide that, especially to a team that has playoff ambitions.
Markelle Fultz
While he may not be the player everyone expected him to be when Philadelphia took him with the No. 1 pick in the 2017 Draft, Fultz can come in to an already good team and provide a little depth off the bench. A nagging knee injury kept Fultz out of action for two months last season, but there could be a few teams looking to take a chance on a player may still have plenty in the tank.
Cam Payne
Payne has been a bit of a journey man in the NBA, but in this day and age of the NBA, if you can shoot the three, you can be useful on a NBA roster. His best days came a few years ago when he was back in Phoenix when they went to the NBA Finals in 2020, but he still shoots around 40% from three point range.
