Donovan Mitchell will be under contract with the Cavaliers during the 2024/25 season, but next summer, he will have the player option to opt for free agency if he wishes. For this reason, the Cleveland franchise wants to avoid letting the 27-year-old player go for free before the start of the 2025/26 campaign, and they are confident that he will extend his contract.

The Cavs know of the Lakers’ interest in pairing him with LeBron James, as they are confident he will return, and Anthony Davis next year. The Los Angeles franchise is looking for an All-Star this offseason to form a trident that will fight for the championship for many years, and Donovan Mitchell would give them that possibility.

Donovan Mitchell spoke about his future

Donovan Mitchell himself denied the rumors about his discontent with the Cavaliers and said that, contrary to the reports, he is happy with the direction of the team. For this reason, Cleveland administrators are confident that the 27-year-old player will sign a long-term extension, and they believe that firing coach J.B. Bickerstaff and bringing in a new one will incline him to stay for many more years.

But at the same time, Donovan Mitchell himself said that before making a decision, he had to sit down and talk to the managers when the current season concluded. According to ESPN, the Lakers know that the five-time All-Star may decide to leave Cleveland, and they already have an offer prepared.

Donovan Mitchell may be tempted to play in a larger market like Los Angeles or New York. However, the 27-year-old’s stance since the Cavaliers were eliminated from the playoffs indicates that his long-term future will remain tied to Cleveland.
