Update:

The Boston Celtics made light work of the Utah Jazz on Friday but there was also some bad news for Joe Mazzulla’s team, who confirmed Jaylen Brown would miss at least the next two games.

Why isn’t Jaylen Brown playing for the Celtics?

The 28-year-old has already sat out two of the Celtics’ last three games because of a knee injury, which has now been diagnosed as a “bone bruise with posterior impingement in his right knee”.

Boston’s injury reported added: “He’ll miss the next two games and will be reevaluated on Monday”.

That revelation suggests a two-game absence is the most optimistic scenario and that Brown could ultimately be on the sidelines for longer. If the latter proves to be the case, it would be a significant blow for the shooting guard on a personal level.

Brown’s potential postseason blow

In order to qualify for postseason awards, including MVP and All-NBA team selections, players must be involved in a minimum of 65 regular-season games (out of 82). Brown has played in 56 so far for the Celtics, which means he must be involved in nine of their last 12 games to be in with a chance of honors.

The Georgia native was named NBA Finals MVP in 2024 and is a four-time NBA-All Star, but is in danger of being ruled out of further recognition this season.

The good news is that Brown’s absence is unlikely to have an effect on the playoff race, with the Celtics comfortably second in the Eastern Conference with a 51-19 record. They will hope to have their guard back at full fitness for the postseason, when they’ll be going in search of a second successive NBA championship.
