Celtics 116 vs 112 Nets summary: stats and highlights | NBA Playoffs
The Boston Celtics are one step closer to the NBA Finals after an opening round sweep of the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night. Jayson Tatum led the way with 29 points in the Celtics 116-112 win over the Brooklyn Nets.
KD not enough for Nets in Game 4
Boston had kept Brooklyn’s stars in check for the first three game, which led to three straight wins. But what would happen when Kevin Durant showed up and exploded on to the playoff scene like we are so used to him doing throughout his career? Well not too much changed.
Durant came in to Game 4 of the series averaging well less and his 24.5 ppg in the playoffs. The Celtics had stifled him for the two games in Boston and the opener from Barclays Center, but on Monday Durant finally broke out of his shoot spell and went for 39 points and 9 assists. It still wasn’t enough to beat this very balanced Boston team.
With their backs against the wall, the Nets came out swinging but the Celtics absorbed every blow that Brooklyn threw. Durant ended the first quarter with 11 points, but Boston still led by four points at the end of 12 minutes.
Boston's defense key to the series
Brooklyn would spend the second quarter trying to draw level or take the lead, but Boston made sure that they kept the Nets at a distance. Before the half, it wasn’t Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown helping the Celtics pull away in the final minutes of the second quarter. It was Grant Williams, who hit four of five threes just as the Nets were building up a run to get back into the ball game. Williams’ four threes helped Boston take a 58-50 lead into the second half.
The final 24 minutes was Tatum and Brown’s time to shine. Every time the Nets got close to getting back into the game the Celtics’ stars would make a play to interrupt the Brooklyn comeback bid.
Brooklyn might have had an easier time getting back into the game is Nic Claxton would have hit any of his first 10 free throws, but the Brooklyn big man started his night 0-10 on the night from the stripe as Boston implemented a “Hack a Clax” briefly in the third quarter.
Bucks or Bulls up next for Boston
Boston built up a 12 point lead to take into the final quarter after 12 points from Tatum in the third. He finished the night with 29 points and five assists on the night, while Jaylen Brown had 22 points, and Marcus Smart posted 20 and 11 assists.
Down by double digits, it wasn’t Kyrie Irving who finished the night with 20 or Durant who at 39 on the night. It was Goran Dragic leading the Nets on an 8-0 run to get with in two points of the Celtics midway through the final quarter. But again, Brown, Smart and Tatum would come up with the clutch baskets when their team needed it most.
Tatum would foul out with over two minutes to go in the game, but even without their superstar Boston seemed unflappable. Durant hit a turnaround to close the gap to to a point with 1:15 to go in the game, but Brown would respond with a lay up on the other end and Horford would follow up a miss with Boston’s tenth offensive rebound of the night and a put back to secure the 109-103 win.
The Celtics now await the winner of the Milwaukee vs. Chicago series. The defending champions lead that series 3-1 and are back home for a potential close out game on Wednesday.
Tatum had 12 at halftime and finished the game with 29.

History against Brooklyn
Brooklyn are up against a deficit that has never been overcome in the history of the NBA. No team has ever comeback from a 3-0 hole to win the series. On three different occasions a team down three games to none has comeback to tie the series, but then lost the all important Game 7. The Knicks did it against the Rochester Royals in the 1951 Finals. Denver evened up the series against the Utah Jazz in 1994, and the last time it happened was when Portland lost Game 7 to the Dallas Mavericks after training 3-0 in the first round of 2003 playoffs
Brown showing up for the Nets
Bruce Brown has been one of the few bright spots for the Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the playoffs. He has started two of the three games in fantastic form, and really set the tone for Brooklyn while KD and Kyrie have been having a tough time against the Celtics defense. After scoring just 5 points in Game 1, he had 23 in Game 2 and 26 in Game 3.
Brown showing up for the Celtics
While Jaylen Brown may not get as much attention as Jayson Tatum, and was never in consideration for the MVP like Jayson Tatum was at one point, the second leading man for the Celtics has been instrumental in the Celtics success this season and particularly in this series. Aside from averaging 23 points over the last three games, he is also getting three steals a night, and had come up with clutch baskets late in the game.
Irving fading
Kyrie Irving has faded as this series has gone on. Since his Game 1 masterpiece of 39 points and six assists in which he nearly single handily led the Nets to victory in the final quarter, he has struggled from the field, shooting just 10-30 over the last two games and 0-8 from downtown. He’s averaging 13 ppg over the last two matches, and if the Nets are going to live to fight another day Kyrie has to be impactful tonight.
JT is the Celtics MVP
Jayson Tatum has been the MVP of this star studded series. He is averaging 29.6 points a game, but states that it’s not about him and Durant going face to face. "I'm not trying to make it a one-on-one thing or a matchup thing. For me, trying to go out there and play as hard as I possibly can, give it everything I got on both ends, and do whatever I can to ensure that we get a win on any given night," Tatum said. "And everybody on our team is doing that, sacrificing, competing, being on the same page."
KD's struggles
Kevin Durant has been nullified by the Boston defense all series long. His shooting numbers have been well below par and he is averaging just 22 points a game in the series while shooting 36.5%. He has admitted to overthinking in the series, and that has had an effect on his play this series. Full story here.
No Simmons tonight
Ben Simmons hasn’t played all season, and will miss Game 4 despite reports suggesting he was on the verge of a return. Simmons refused to play for the Philadelphia 76ers after a pre and mid season drama had him excommunicated from the team. He was traded to the Nets right before the All-Star break, but has yet to debut for Brooklyn because of a back injury.
Is this the last drip session for the Nets?

Marginal margin of victory through three games
While the Celtics have shown their superiority over the last three games, the Nets have been in each contest late down the stretch. They were a second away from a Game 1 win in Boston, before Tatum hit the buzzer beating lay up to win by a point. The largest margin of victory came in Game 2 when the Celtics won by seven after holding the Nets to just 17 points in the final quarter. The average margin of victory is 4.6 points per game.
Game 3 Summary
