The San Antonio Spurs have a new game director. And not just anyone - 12-time All-Star Chris Paul lands in the Texan city with the summer market barely started. The 39-year-old had considered a number of different options. Paul had been waived by the Warriors, where he spent the past year, making him a free agent and able to begin negotiating with other teams.

Initially, his priority was to join a team that could lead him to a championship title - something that he has never won. In the end, he decided on a move that will give him the chance to pass on his knowledge, wisdom and experience to the budding stars of the future.

Details of Chris Paul’s one-year contract with the Spurs emerge

TNT and Bleacher Report journalist Chris Haynes announced Chris Paul’s new destination and Adrian Wojnarowski put a price on the operation: 11 million dollars guaranteed for one season. An exciting 2024/25 lies ahead in which Victor Wembanyama will be a sophomore. There are few better than Paul at setting the timing of plays and allowing the French star to demonstrate his full potential.

Paul made his NBA debut almost two decades ago. He was selected by the New Orleans Hornets in 2005 and went on to reach the highest levels and win a host of personal awards, appearing in the All-NBA First Team four times (2008, 2012–2014). He finished last season averaging 9.2 points, 3.9 rebounds. 6.8 assists and 44.1 per cent from the field.

He will be coached for the first time by another of the great masters of the game, Gregg Popovich, in a three-way union that already has fans excited just at the thought of it.

The Warriors had held out until the last minute in an attempt to use Paul as a bargaining chip in another exchange deal - similar to what is currently happening to Andrew Wiggins and what could also happen to Klay Thompson despite his confirmed departure. But the right formula couldn’t be found with the former Hornets, Clippers, Rockets, Thunder, Suns and Warriors guard which prompted the San Francisco team to release him so he could explore the full extent of the market.
