Zion’s injury troubles
Of the 65 games the Pelicans have played this season, Zion Williamson has played less than half. This comes a season after not playing a single game in 2021/22. The New Orleans Pelicans took a risk on one of the most highly prized player to come out of the draft in a long time, but that risk has not paid off so far. When he is on the floor, he’s a stud. Zion is averaging 26 points, 7 rebounds and 4.6 assists and was named to the All-Star Game, a game which he had to sit out with injury like many of the other games over his short, injury filled career.
Kyrie in Big D
The Mavs have played 11 games since Kyrie came to town, and in those games Dallas has gone 4-7. He didn’t play in the Mavericks’ loss to the Nuggets so in games that he has played they are 4-6, but that’s not going to cut it for the tandem that was thought to be the answer to bring Big D back to the Finals. In his 10 games wearing the blue and white, he is averaging 27.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.7 assists.
Western Conference Standings
Taking a look at the standings in the West with just over a month to go, we see the Denver Nuggets setting the pace at the top of the table at 46-19. The Mavericks are 12.5 games back in fifth place, but they are only a half game above the Timberwolves who have the first of four play-in tournament spots. The Pelicans have plummeted down the standings and now sit in the final play-in position, tied on record but with the head to head advantage over the Blazers and Thunder at 31-34.
Mavs need some magic
Luka and Kyrie understand that if the Mavericks can’t sort their problems, it will fall directly on their shoulders. The two superstars have put up decent stats, but the wins are evading them. Tonight they have a chance to rattle off consecutive wins for the first time as Denver’s news Power Duo. They beat the Sixers, kept it close with the new look Suns, and handled the Jazz in their last three so their are starting to look like a team that is gelling, but nothing will declare that more than a win streak
Pelicans down but not out
The Pelicans have played at home just once in the last month. They have hit a slump at the worst time of the season, and have had some serious injury issues to deal with in the most crucial month of the season. With star players like Zion Williamson, who has been out since the beginning of the calendar year, and Jose Alvarado who is out with a tibia injury it will be up to Brandon Graham to carry the weight of the Pelicans playoff hopes for the next few weeks.
Pelicans last game
New Orleans dropped their sixth game in their last seven on Monday night in Sacramento to finish a three game road trip. The game was tight for most of the way, but the Pelicans had no answer for Domantas Sabonis who produced yet another triple double and and Kevin Huerter led the team with 25 points on 6-10 shooting from three. The Kings pulled away at the end of the third quarter and cruised to victory to stay among the elite in the Western Conference.
Mavs last game
The Mavs got their their second win in three games with a narrow victory over the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night in Dallas. Irving took the torch as the Mavericks leading scorer pouring in 33 points, scoring 17 of those in the fourth quarter to propel his side to victory as Doncic chipped in 29 points and 10 rebounds. They have still to string two wins together while on the floor at the same time, but have a chance to do so tonight against a slumping Pelicans side.
We are live from New Orleans
