The NBA schedule has always been demanding, but since the pandemic, it’s produced some unusual quirks. One of them is back-to-back matchups in the same arena, sometimes with just a day in between, creating a strange sense of déjà vu.

That’s exactly what happened with the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers, who faced off again in Houston just two days after their previous meeting in the same building. It meant another showdown between Kevin Durant and LeBron James, with Luka Doncic as the central figure, and for long stretches, it felt like watching a replay of a game that had just happened.

At 41, LeBron delivers one of his best shooting nights ever

All of this comes in the middle of March, that point in the season when questions about the length of the 82-game schedule start to feel more real. Still, this particular matchup carried extra weight. Both teams are battling for positioning, and every game matters.

The Lakers came into the game riding a six-game winning streak, fueled by strong team defense and collective effort that has finally made them look like legitimate contenders, even if winning a title still feels like a stretch.

The Rockets, meanwhile, were trending in the opposite direction - 3–3 in their last six games and 4–5 in their last nine. Inconsistency has hit them at the worst possible time. Kevin Durant was doing everything he could, but he had already struggled against the Lakers’ defense in their previous matchup, and the same issues resurfaced, especially in the second half, when he shot just 1-for-5 and committed six turnovers.

The stakes were high for Houston. A loss would make it harder to keep pace in the race for home-court advantage in the first round, with the Nuggets and Timberwolves right alongside them in the standings.

For the Lakers, the opportunity was just as significant. A win would create separation from a direct competitor and further solidify the momentum they’d built in recent weeks.

In the end, it wasn’t just a repeat of the matchup. It was a repeat of the result. The Lakers secured another impressive win, 124–116, powered by two standout performances.

Doncic led the way with 40 points, 9 rebounds, and 10 assists, including a clutch three-pointer in the final minute that sealed the game.

LeBron added 30 points on an incredible 13-of-14 shooting, including a perfect 8-for-8 first half, plus 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. At 41 years old, it was one of the most efficient shooting nights of his career. He continues to defy time, leading the league in transition scoring and already throwing down 72 dunks in 48 games this season.

The Rockets had their moments, but a 35–24 fourth quarter from the Lakers put the game out of reach. Amen Thompson (26 points, 11 rebounds) and Alperen Şengün (27 points, 10 assists) led Houston, while Durant had a quieter night with 18 points.

It wasn’t enough against a team playing at this level. The Lakers, led by Luka and LeBron, have now won seven straight games.
