Doncic goes down, Lakers collapse in OKC

Apart from the stunning blowout loss to the Thunder, the Lakers are now consumed by concern over Luka Doncic’s injury.

Apart from the stunning blowout loss to the Thunder, the Lakers are now consumed by concern over Luka Doncic’s injury.

With the Los Angeles Lakers surging in the West, it was inevitable their fanbase would start dreaming big. Not because they’re likely to climb higher in the standings (third place appears to be theirs if they stay the course and hold off the Denver Nuggets), but because of the challenge ahead.

Two of their next three games come against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the defending champions and leaders of the conference. The other opponent is the Dallas Mavericks, in what was set to be another emotionally charged return for Luka Doncic - if it happens at all.

Because while those matchups against Oklahoma City were meant to serve as a measuring stick for the Lakers’ true potential, everything else - how they lost, what needs fixing - has taken a back seat after what happened last night.

Luka Doncic injury sends shockwaves through Lakers

Right now, nothing matters more for the Lakers players and fans than the physical condition of their star. Doncic suffered another injury, a muscle issue in one of his legs, and this one looked worse than previous incidents, setting off alarm bells.

With just a week and a half left in the regular season, any significant injury could deal a devastating blow to the team’s morale. That’s why the result at Paycom Center quickly became secondary - a 139–96 loss that brought the Lakers crashing back to reality. Competing toe-to-toe with this dominant Thunder team is a task reserved for the elite, and at this moment, the Lakers are not there.

It’s worth noting that the injury did not cause the blowout. The damage was already done by the time Doncic left the game. That doesn’t excuse the Lakers, who failed to meet the challenge, especially in the first half, before everything unraveled after halftime.

They’ll get another shot at Oklahoma City next week, a chance to respond and leave a better impression. Because any real playoff hopes depend on being able to compete with teams like the Thunder or the San Antonio Spurs.

For now, though, all attention is on Doncic’s medical evaluation - a decision that feels almost like those made in ancient Rome: thumbs up or thumbs down. Because losing Doncic at this stage, when he’s needed most, in the postseason, would be a death sentence for the Lakers.

The videos of the injury are troubling. Worse than previous ones he suffered with both the Lakers and the Mavericks. What’s commonly described as a “shot” to the muscle, this time in the back of his left leg, around the hamstring area.

With 7:39 left in the third quarter, 12 points to his name, and the scoreboard reading 90–58, his night ended. On a fast break down the left side, he spun against Jalen Williams, stopped, and tried to make a second move as Isaiah Hartenstein closed in, and that’s when everything gave out.

Later otoday, Lakers medical staff will evaluate the severity of the injury to determine whether this is worse than similar issues he has dealt with in recent years.

Earlier this season, just two months ago, Doncic missed time due to that same left leg. Around the All-Star break, his activity was limited, even during the event in Los Angeles, to avoid aggravating the issue. That time, he missed only four games. The hope now is that this turns out to be no worse.

The most troubling part is that there was a warning sign. Doncic had already been seen grabbing that same area in the first half. According to head coach JJ Redick, he was checked and cleared to continue.

“We’re not going to put a player at risk. Things like this can happen,” Redick said.

As for the game itself, there was little to take away. Oklahoma City was simply too much. A 44–21 opening quarter wiped out any chance of a competitive contest. The Thunder shot 54% from the field and hit 19 three-pointers. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the way with 28 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in just 30 minutes.

The frustration for the Lakers runs deep when facing Oklahoma City. Here’s a telling stat: since LeBron James joined the Lakers, the two largest halftime deficits they’ve suffered have both come this season - 32 points in November and 31 in this game - both against the Thunder.

There was simply no contest. The final margin reached 43 points after Doncic exited and another crushing stretch (30–16 in the third quarter) effectively ended the game long before the final buzzer.
