Basketball consistently ranks among the most eagerly anticipated events during the Olympic Games.

With less than twelve months remaining until the commencement of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, basketball enthusiasts worldwide have their eyes fixed on the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Asia. The ongoing competition, hosted across Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines from August 25 to September 10, carries huge significance. It not only determines the world champion but also allocates seven berths for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.

Let’s dive into the route to securing qualification for the upcoming Olympic Games.

Basketball qualification pathway to Paris 2024

A total of twelve teams are set to partake in the basketball tournament at the upcoming Olympic Games, with France enjoying a host nation quota. Another avenue for securing seven quotas is available through the World Cup. These coveted quotas for Paris 2024 will be earned by the most successful nations from respective continents, determined by the final official standings of the FIBA World Cup 2023.

Here’s the distribution of these quotas:

  • Two for the Americas
  • Two for Europe
  • One for Africa
  • One for Asia
  • One for Oceania

Should a team fall short of achieving the required ranking to claim one of the seven quotas at the World Cup, their Olympic aspirations need not end. The remaining four quotas for Paris 2024 will be up for grabs at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments (FOQTs) in 2024.

The FOQTs will feature four tournaments, each comprising six teams. The winner of each tournament will secure a spot for the Olympic Games.

The FIBA World Cup 2023′s final official classification determines automatic qualification for the FOQTs for the second-best African team, second-best Asian team, and third-best team from the Americas.

Furthermore, an additional 16 teams, based on the final official standings of the FIBA World Cup 2023, will also earn their place in the FOQTs. These teams haven’t clinched one of the seven direct quotas for Paris 2024 or the three other slots awarded directly according to their respective continents.

The last five spots have already been clinched by the victors of the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualification Tournaments (FOPQTs), which concluded on August 20. The qualified nations are Poland, Bahrain, Croatia, the Bahamas, and Cameroon.

Cameroon’s victory over Senegal (80-74) has granted them a chance to compete in the FOQTs for the first time since 2008. Meanwhile, the Bahamas, by triumphing over the 2019 world finalists and Athens 2004 Olympic champions Argentina (82-75), have also secured their presence.
