“Forget that, we’re champs!” - Curry on being Finals MVP

Steph Curry won Finals MVP for the first time when the Warriors beat the Celtics to win the championship, but the Warriors star says it was a team effort.

After winning his fourth championship title with the Golden State Warriors, Stephen Curry was finally awarded the Finals MVP award. In the last three championships he was a part of, his teammates won the title over him, but in the Warriors victory over the Boston Celtics, Curry was the clear key to Golden State coming out on top.

That’s not to say it was not a team effort, with players like Andrew Wiggins, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green making big plays on both offense and defense. But Curry’s numbers are ridiculous, even despite his rare off-day in Game 5. But Curry himself made sure to mention his teammates. When a reporter asked him what it means to him to finally be Finals MVP, he brushed her off, slamming his fist on the table, saying “forget that! We’re champs! Why’d you start with that question? We got four championships!”

Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green now each have four rings, but getting that fourth one was quite the journey. Since 2019, the Warriors have been dealing with injuries and trades that saw them in a playoff drought. But once the trio got back together, the Warriors were unstoppable yet again.

“Just knowing what the last three years have meant, what it’s been like,” said Curry. “From injuries to changing of the guard, the rosters, Wiggs [Andrew Wiggins] coming through, our young guys. Carrying the belief that we could get back to the stage and win, even if it didn’t make sense to anybody else when we said it.

“All that stuff matters. And now we’ve got four championships.”

With Curry’s first Finals MVP award, he has a complete collection of accolades from All-Star MVP, two-time NBA MVP ,and now four championships with the Warriors. In the final game against the Celtics, Curry scored 34 points, seven assists, and seven rebounds. In the series, he averaged 31.2 points, six rebounds, and five assists per game.

“It’s special, man. It’s special,” said Curry. “Just all the work that went into it, all the faith and belief, and everybody in that locker room that’s getting to spray champagne around the locker room, everybody mattered in that process. I’m just proud of everybody.”
