Update:

After months of speculation, Trae Young’s departure from the Atlanta Hawks has been confirmed.

The 27-year-old guard has been traded to the Washington Wizards, where he will become the face of the franchise. Young will reunite with Travis Schlenk, currently a Wizards executive, who drafted him for the Hawks in 2018.

Washington will hope that Young can add firepower to an offensive that ranks 27th in offensive efficiency this season. With Young spearheading the team, the Hawks ranked No. 1 for offense in 2020/21 and 2021/22.

What do the Hawks get out of the Trae Young trade?

In the trade, Atlanta will get CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert from Washington. They also get to shift the remaining $95 million on Young’s contract, which runs through 2026/27, bringing them $30 million below the luxury tax.

That gives Atlanta considerable flexibility to pursue a big trade in the coming months, with Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis tipped as a target. However no draft picks have been sent from Washington to Atlanta.

A four-time All-Star, Young is one of the most dominant offensive talents in the league on his day. However those days have become increasingly rare and the team is 2-10 with him in the lineup this season.

With the Atlanta front office looking to take the team in a new direction, the emergence of young prospects like Jalen Johnson, Nickaeil Alexander-Walker and Zaccharie Risacher offers the possibility of a more fluid style of play. Young will go down as a Hawks legend but his departure may pave the way for an exciting future.
