Hawks 107 vs. 101 Cavaliers summary: stats and highlights | NBA Play-In
The Atlanta Hawks are moving on to the first round of the NBA Playoffs after defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. Trae Young was outstanding in the second half and finished with 38 points in the 107-101 win.
Young starts slow in second straigh game
It was the final game of the Eastern Conference Play-In Tournament, but the atmosphere inside the stadium in Cleveland made it feel like a Game 7 of the NBA Finals. The Cavs were looking for their first playoff trip since 2018, while the Hawks were hoping to get to the playoffs and continue their quest to return to the Eastern Conference Finals.
It wasn’t a pretty start for Atlanta, who struggled to keep up with the Cavs. Cleveland came out hot from downtown, especially Lauri Markkanen who hit three triples in the first few minutes, and would end the opening half with a 17 points on 5/8 shooting from downtown.
Trae Young was kept in check over the first two quarters scoring just six points heading into halftime. The Cavs were able to stretch the lead out to as many as 14 in the second quarter. To make matters worse the Hawks lost their big man Clint Capela to a knee injury right before the break.
Allen's return not enough for Cavs
With Cavs’ center Jarrett Allen returning from a broken finger he suffered in early March, Cleveland had a big advantage down low and on the scoreboard heading into the half up ten.
Young, as he so often does in big moments took the game over in the second half. Much like he did in the game against the Hornets, the Hawks sharp shooter came out of the locker room in take over mode. He scored or assisted on 27 of Atlanta’s 33 points scored in the third to give the Hawks the lead for the first time since early in the first half, and was just getting started.
Atlanta’s defense stepped up in the fourth quarter, not allowing a field goal for the first four minutes. Trae Young led an 11-0 run to stretch the lead 95-86, but the lead was short lived. Darius Garland and Evan Mobley got the Cavs back into the game and reignited the Cleveland crowd. The Hawks lead was cut down to one, but the Cavs would not take the lead again as Atlanta held on for the victory.
Top seeded Heat next up for Hawks
Trae Young finished the game with 38 points, 32 in the second half, while Bodgan Bogdanovic had 19 points on 6/8 shooting. Clint Capela’s status for the first round is still to be determined, as Atlanta awaits John Collins to make his return as well.
The Cavs will have to wait another year to get back to the playoffs, while the Hawks are back in the Eastern Conference Playoffs and will be looking to upset the top seeded Miami Heat.
It wasn't easy, but Atlanta are on to the first round of the playoffs. The top seeded Miami Heat await.
