Heat go international, select Nikola Jovic at No. 27 overall
The Miami Heat go international, selecting Serbian Nikola Jovic who’s assuredly similar to back-to-back MVP Nikola Jokic.
Nikola Jovic, who just got selected by the Miami Heat with the No. 27 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, is another Serbian playmaker with a talent as versatile as his size. Not only does the 19-year-old have the same name as the two-time MVP player, Nikola Jokic (minus the k), but he also played on the same Serbian pro team as Jokic, the Adriatic League’s Mega Basket.
Miami’s move to the shooting forward came as a bit of a surprise to many, with dominant collegiate prospects like Kentucky guard TyTy Washington, Ohio State forward E.J. Liddell, and Tennessee guard Kennedy Chandler, still on the board.
Another surprise that started out the night was the Magic selecting an unexpected first round pick. More on that here.
Who is the new Nikola?
The 6-foot-10, 227-pound forward grew up playing point guard, but as a late bloomer, he grew to stretch the floor and pass outstandingly well.
While Jovic, who first excelled as a water polo player, still needs to fill out to an NBA, he would arrive as an NBA-level 3-point shooter.
