With the NBA offseason now in full swing, moves are being made but there is one name remaining that could yet make massive waves in the free agent market. Should that prove to be the case it will be at the expense of the Golden State Warriors, something the team’s head coach seems to be aware of.

Steve Kerr wants Klay Thompson to stay

If you didn’t know, the NBA’s free agency period begins on June 30th. When it does, there is no doubt that the Golden State Warriors’ Klay Thompson will be among the biggest names on the block, if not the biggest. Indeed, when you consider the fact that Thompson has won several championships it’s strange to think that we’ve come to the place where the team that drafted him may lose him. Yet, that’s the way it’s starting to look and that’s something that Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is openly lamenting.

Speaking on the Jim Rome Show on Tuesday, Kerr didn’t hold back when the conversation rolled around to Thompson’s situation. “What I do know is Klay has been such an integral part of everything around here,” Kerr told Rome. “Obviously he’s a multi-time champion, but even more than that, just someone who has such a great connection with the Bay Area, with the franchise, with his teammates. We want Klay back desperately, I want him back desperately. And we will have our conversations and he’s gotta make whatever decision he makes, but yeah, we really want him back. He’s Klay Thompson. We really want him back. He’s Klay Thompson.”

Now, here’s the thing. Klay Thompson - to be clear - is one of the most consistent two-way threats in the modern era. Not only that but he’s established himself as such while playing for and winning several championships with the only team that he’s ever been on the roster of in the NBA. Of course, we’ve got to be honest. Klay Thompson at 34 years old is not what he once was. Aside from the stats that paint a career in decline, one could say that the same fire Warriors fans were accustomed to just isn’t there anymore. Consider for a moment that in his last game of the season Thompson shot 0-for-10 from the field against the Sacramento Kings in the play-in tournament.

So, what happens now? Reports suggest that Thompson and the Warriors have come to a standstill where a deal is concerned. What that means is the focus immediately shifts to where he could go should he leave, something that’s looking more likely by the minute. If you caught our previous report, the franchise has already made it clear that it wants to retain his services, which makes sense as it’s no secret it wants to profit off of Steph Curry’s final prime years. Surely the ‘Splash Brothers’ have to stick together, right? Regardless, if one thing is clear in the Bay Area, it’s that an era has come to an end.
