One thing is to be injured right before an important moment in your season, another is to suffer the injury at the hands of your own teammate. Unfortunately for the Celtics and two of their stars, that’s exactly what happened on Wednesday night.

Celtics Jaylen Brown set to miss All-Star Weekend

According to reports on Thursday, Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown is now set to spend some time on the side lines, which means he will almost certainly miss the NBA’s upcoming All-Star break. Brown suffered a facial fracture during Wednesday’s 106 - 99 win over the Philadelphia 76ers, though the extent of the fracture is not yet known, with Brown due to a see a specialist on Thursday.

Regarding how the injury itself occurred, it was just before halftime at the TD Garden when Brown collided with teammate Jayson Tatum. Upon closer inspection via video replays, Tatum’s elbow can be seen making an impact with Brown’s cheek as the pair attempted to grab the rebound. Brown’s reaction was immediate, as he went to ground grabbing his face, before promptly making his way directly to the locker room. With that, Brown’s 18 minutes on the floor came to an end with four points and three assists.

How did the Celtics cope and without Jaylen Brown and what was said?

Speaking after the game, Celtics interim coach Joe Mazzulla could offer no further update on his player’s status. Indeed, Mazzulla reportedly called Brown after the game, however, it’s understood that the call was not answered. Needless to say, this is a loss both for the Celtics and fans who were hoping to get a look at the star during the upcoming All-Star Weekend. This is in fact the second time that the second time that the 26-year-old has been named to the All-Star team and in truth, he’s good value for it. For the season so far, Brown has averaged a career 28 points to go with 7.1 rebounds. There has been no official word on who will replace him for the game.

On the bright side, the Celtics were still able to get the win despite what is a growing injury list. Including Brown, the Celtics are now without Al Horford, Marcus Smart and Robert Williams due to injuries. Sadly, what has kept Boston going is strong performances from Brown and the man who inadvertently injured him, Jayson Tatum. Where the latter is concerned, he’s been stellar as evidenced by the 12 points, nine assists and eight rebounds that he got against Philly. It was in fact the Celtics ninth win in the last 11 games. If there is a silver lining here, it’s that given the nature of Brown’s injury, he probably won’t be out for very long. With that said, one can imagine that as much as he’ll be disappointed to miss the All-Star Weekend, he’ll take comfort in knowing he can get back to his team in the near future.
