The New York Knicks, who were established in 1946, are one of the most lucrative franchises in the NBA. They are also one of only two teams that are still located in their original city, New York, where they play at Madison Square Garden.

Since becoming part of the NBA in 1949, the Knicks had winning records in each of their first nine seasons. They advanced to the NBA finals three years in a row (1951–53), losing each time. In the early 1960s, the team’s fortunes began to alter.

How many NBA Championship titles did the Knicks win?

After drafting Willis Reed in 1964, the Knicks won their first NBA championship in 1970 after defeating the Los Angeles Lakers (4-1).

Their second title came in 1973 (4-3), also defeating the LA team under the guidance of Red Holzman and the performance of Willis Reed.

Since then, New York has struggled to get another championship title.

Will the Knicks advance past first playoff round in 2023?

The Knicks have taken it up a notch this season as they’ve climbed into the top six of the Eastern Conference. While they are not yet a contender, they are seeking their second playoff berth in three seasons after breaking an eight-year playoff drought in 2020-21, when the team finished No. 11 in the conference. They ended just shy of reach of the play-in tournament last season. Point guard, Jalen Brunson, has already upped the game for New York, thanks to a four-year, $104 million contract in free agency.

There’s a chance the Knicks advance past the first round of the playoffs this season for only the second time since the 1999-2000 season.
