How much audience did Caitlin Clark draw for the WNBA Draft?
The Indiana Fever’s new basketball player increased the Women’s Basketball League Draft audience by five times compared to the previous year.
Caitlin Clark has become a sensation ever since she joined the top tier of women’s basketball. As a former player for Iowa Hawkeyes, she has been setting new records in various areas. Recently, during the National Championship college final between Iowa and South Carolina, 18.7 million viewers watched the game in which the Hawkeyes lost.
Coupled with her NCAA points record, Clark has already surpassed a couple of WNBA marks, even without playing. The first, they sold out of her jersey just an hour after the Fever election. Second, she produced an unprecedented viewership record for the WNBA Draft.
During the Draft, ESPN’s broadcast had an average of 2.45 million viewers and reached a peak of 3.09 million. This is almost five times more than the previous Draft, which had an average of 512,000 viewers.
Clark broke the record set by Diana Taurasi during the 2004 Draft. Taurasi was picked by the Phoenix Mercury and had 601,000 viewers. Clark surpassed the highest WNBA broadcast record, 2.74 million, on Memorial Day in 2000. The record was set during a game between the New York Liberty and Houston Comets.
