How much is Jaylen Brown’s supermax contract extension worth?
The forward renews with the Boston Celtics on a record, five-year deal, starting from the 2024-25 season.
Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics have reached an agreement which will keep the 26-year-old on board at the franchise until 2029 with the richest contract in NBA history. The forward signs for five seasons and $304 million. He will begin to earn an average of $60.8 million per year starting in the 2024-25 season - he still has one more year to go from his previous contract for $28.5 million.
The NBA’s mega contracts
It’s the first time in history that the $300 million barrier has been broken in the NBA. It surpasses the $272 million in 5 years signed by Nikola Jokic and the $251 million also over five years by Bradley Beal. To put it into context, the largest contract agreed by LeBron James, for example, was $153 million for four seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and Stephen Curry’s - $215 million, also over four seasons.
The forward landed at the TD Garden in 2016 after being chosen number 3 in the draft. Always in the shadow of Jayson Tatum, Brown has been a key piece in the growth of the Celtics in recent seasons with averages that exceed 20 points since 2019. Despite his importance (or because of it), he has been the center of criticism after the loss in the 2022 finals and the elimination in the last playoffs for the title by the Miami Heat.
