According to sources, Paolo Banchero, the current NBA Rookie of the Year, has committed to playing for Team USA in the upcoming FIBA World Cup after a successful recruiting effort by the team. The Orlando Magic player had previously verbally committed to play for the Italian team.

Once a player chooses a national team to represent, they are not allowed to change to another team. The decision has higher stakes due to increased competition on the world basketball stage, which will be showcased at the upcoming World Cup in August in Manila, Philippines.

Banchero persuaded to play for the US in the coming FIBA World Cup

Banchero, who is 20 years old, has been successfully recruited by Team USA after several months of effort by coach Steve Kerr, managing director Grant Hill, and general manager Sean Ford. Banchero was recruited by the Italian Basketball Federation when he was 16 years old. In 2020, the federation helped him obtain a passport which allowed him to join the team.

According to interviews, Banchero expressed his readiness to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as a member of Team Italy. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he could not pursue his original plans, which has now created an opportunity for him to play for Team USA.

Banchero’s physical attributes make him a suitable player for the international game, as having a size on the perimeter is highly advantageous. His 3-point shooting skills are not exceptional. But his defense makes up for it.
