Joel Embiid’s reaction to Paul George signing and Philadelphia’s Big Three

It was the headline of the postseason. The signing that is going to bring hope back to the City of Brotherly Love. Paul George left the Los Angeles Clippers to join the Philadelphia 76ers, and it’s not just the fans that are buzzing, their MVP is liking how the future is shaping up in Philly.

Philly flopping recently

Joel Embiid may have won the NBA’s MVP two seasons ago, he may have been one of the top scorers in the league over the last couple seasons, but there is something that has eluded him since he’s arrived in the league. The Sixers have suffered disappointment after disappointment in the playoffs, but things might be turning around in the eyes of Embiid.

The James Harden project didn’t work out in Philly, and the Sixers ended up trading Harden at the beginning of last year. That left Embiid and emerging star Tyrese Maxey to carry the team, which they did for the first half of the season, but an all-too-common problem presented itself towards after the turn of the new year. Embiid went down with injury and Maxey was left to keep the Sixers head above water until the postseason.

Embiid finally returned but was far from 100% healthy and far from tip top shape. The Sixers had to get through the Play-In which they did, but then met the New York Knicks in the first round of the playoffs. They took the Knicks to six games but ended up getting knocked out of the playoffs much earlier than anticipated.

The Sixers center admitted frustration had filtered into his mind following early exits in the playoffs. “I’d be lying to say that patience wasn’t tested,” Embiid told ESPN. “Because I’m at the point where there’s no awards, there’s no regular season or no All-NBA or All-Stars is going to change the way my legacy is. Well, there’s a few things that can change it, but the main one is the championship. So when you start thinking about what you want to be remembered at, you want to be remembered as someone that’s won.

PG in Philly “looks amazing”

Embiid is currently with Team USA, preparing for the Paris Olympics that start at the end of the month. While the focus is on winning gold, he has been paying attention to the Sixers offseason moves, and so far he is liking what he sees.

“Yeah, I think as far as the fit, it looks amazing,” Embiid told ESPN. “It is great, especially when you got a big ... I don’t like to call myself a big, but when you got a player that posts up and that isos quite a bit, you need to have willing shooters and guys that are not afraid to pull the trigger. PG, great shooter, 40%, 45 catch and shoot; Tyrese, we know great shooter, off the dribble, catch-and-shoot.”

The MVP has had weapons around him before, so he was hesitant to say if he, Maxey and George make up the league’s best big three.

“On paper, and as far as the fit, it looks fantastic because you got both guys that can play off the ball, and they can play on ball and they’re great shooters and they can handle the ball, and then you also got me,” he said with a rye smile before adding, “So, yeah, it looks great.”
