Knicks eyeing ten-time NBA All-Star to replace Tom Thibodeau
Within days of the New York Knicks announcing the shock departure a number of prominent names are already in the mix.
The New York Knicks are set for a very busy offseason. Within days of their series loss in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Knicks had announced the departure of head coach Tom Thibodeau and may already be honing in on a replacement.
ESPN reports that the Knicks are actively investigating the possibility of pursuing Jason Kidd, head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.
Kidd would not be easy to spring from the Mavericks, the team that he spent two spells with as a player and took to the NBA Finals as a head coach. However the Knicks are considering a trade that would allow them to bring in Kidd.
The Knicks have eight second-round picks for this year’s NBA Draft and a top-eight-protected pick for 2026. They could present a tempting package for the Mavs as they embark on a major roster overhaul.

This is not the first time that Kidd has been linked with the Knicks. The NBA Hall of Famer ended his playing career with a brief stint with the Knicks in 2013 and later interviewed for the vacant head coaching role in New York in 2020. Instead, Thibodeau got the job.
Regardless of the Knicks’ position on Kidd, the situation largely depends on the view held by the Dallas hierarchy. Having recently traded away Luka Doncic to the LA Lakers and having snatched the No. 1 overall pick for the 2025 NBA Draft, the Mavericks have a lot of freedom in terms of their next directions.
General manager Nico Harrison may decide that his head coach provides some much-needed stability during a spell of turbulence. Or he may think that now is the time for a complete refresh and agree a deal to part with the popular head coach.
