Kyrie Irving wants to play outside the NBA
Kyrie Irving said that he still has a career with the NBA for a while, but added that he hopes to spend his last years as a player in other leagues.
There are few characters in the NBA as outlandish as Kyrie Irving, and few as good: so good, in fact, that sometimes you manage to forget the outlandish part.
Surrounded by rumors of leaving Brooklyn, with his future linked to what happens with Kevin Durant, who has requested a transfer, the seven-time All-Star left an interesting reflection on his Twitter account.
Kyrie doesn’t need to fill ‘er up
It was a response to a user who asked him if he had to “fill up the gas tank” for the next season, implying that the years could begin to affect his performance,
The 30-year-old made it clear that he didn’t need to do such a thing.
“I never have to fill up on gas. I am going to play my 12th year in the best league in the world and I am only getting better. When I’m 38 and have time to really reflect on my career, I’ll do it, but until then, I’m going to enjoy every moment of it.”
And it was here, with the reference to that exact age, 38, when he said the most interesting thing of all. That he intends not to retire in the NBA, and that he wants to try playing for other teams in other places.
“And no, I won’t stop playing basketball at 38 years old. I will be in leagues all over the world playing and teaching young people everything they taught me,” he wrote.
Kyrie’s international future?
What does Irving mean by “other leagues in the world”? Will he follow in the footsteps of some of his compatriots to China or Japan, countries where they pay well and the demand is much lower?
Or would he still be able to compete at the highest level and come to play in Europe? The idea of the point guard playing in a foreign league is very fascinating, even if he were already 38 years old. But, according to what he said, there will still be quite the wait before this pans out.
We’ll find out in 2030.
