The Los Angeles Lakers are tied with the Boston Celtics for most NBA championships in the history of the league. The Celtics are in the running to break the tie and win their 18th trophy while the Lakers are in the midst of trying to find their next coach after UCONN coach Dan Hurley rejected their big money offer.

Jackson tied with Kundla for most titles

The Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Denver Nuggets, and shortly after that they fired head coach Darvin Ham after two seasons. Hurley was offered a six year deal worth $70 million dollars, but turned it down to stay with UCONN as they seek a third straight title next season.

The Lakers have been through a coaching carrousel for over a decade as they look for the next long term successor to Phil Jackson who was the winningest coach in franchise history. Jackson left the Lakers in 2011 and seven coaches have come and gone for the Western Conference’s winningest team.

Jackson’s 610 wins are the most in team history, but his five titles are only matched by one other coach in the history of the franchise. Here’s one for trivia night. The other coach with 5 NBA tiles with LA is John Kundla. Kundla was the first ever coach of the team back in the 40s and 50s. In his 12 years with the team, he won 423 games and hoisted the trophy five times.

As the Lakers continue looking towards the future on the sidelines, we take a look back at the winningest coaches in LA history.
