Two of the most successful and most followed franchises go head to head in the first of a best-of-seven semi-final series in San Francisco tonight in what Darvin Ham described as “the rivalry of a generation”. Steph Curry’s Warriors, seven-time winners, take on the Lakers at the Chase Center with LeBron James and Co. hoping to take something from what has been an erratic season at the best of times.
Los Angeles have 17 NBA Championships under their belt - more than any other team, now they face the defending champions who appear to be hitting form just when it counts. Sixth-seeded Golden State found themselves 0-2 down in their first-round series against the Sacramento Kings but retaliated to win the series 4-3 with Curry in mesmerizing form, hitting 50 points in Game 7 to set a new NBA record.
The Lakers took a while to get into their stride - just two wins in the first 10 games of the regular season was the worst start in the franchise’s history. But since then, Darvin Ham’s team have managed to dramatically turn their situation around, with newcomers D’Angelo Russell and Jarred Vanderbilt on board they went 21-9 to post the best record in the league since February’s All-Star break.
The Lakers and Warriors have met 22 times in the playoffs, with Los Angeles winning 13 of those series and the Dubs, nine. This season, the Lakers had had the edge, winning three out of the four matchups so far but Golden State go into this as favourites at -155.
Lebron said ahead of the first installment of this series: “It’s two of the most competitive players that’s ever played this game. And we want to etch our name in the history books as best as we can. I have nothing but the utmost respect for Steph and everything that he has accomplished on the floor - and off it too. It’s great to have people like that in this league, setting an example for the generation to come”.
