Western Conference Standings
Taking a look at the standings coming out of the All-Star Break we see the Lakers and the Warriors both in Play-In positions. The Lakers are in 9th place with a record of 30-26 while the Golden State at 27-26, 1.5 games behind Lakers in 10th place. This isn’t exactly where these two teams want to be at the end of the regular season, although they have grown quite familiar to having to get through the Play-In Tournament in the last few years.
Thompson adjusting to new role
Klay Thompson has always been one to wear his emotions on his sleeve. We’ve been there for his ups and downs. The four time champion, who has had to deal with two potentially career ending injuries, is now having to adjust to his new role on a team he helped lead to dynasty status over the last decade. We have seen Steve Kerr bench him late in the fourth quarter of tight games, and just before the halftime break we saw him come off the bench as rookie Brandon Podziemski started in his place. He may not always be happy with his role, but he showed his can still be productive in whatever role his coach needs him to play.
LA needs AD to be dominant
The Lakers are already a team that revolve around Anthony Davis. As he goes, so do the Lakers. When he struggles, the Lakers struggle as well. That’s going to be even more the case with LeBron James set to miss a bit of time as he recovers from his ankle injury. This is a team that has been no stranger to dealing with injuries, and now the All-Star center needs to put this team on his shoulders and ensure the Lakers make the post season, preferably with an automatic playoff bid. He’s averaging 24.9 points, 12.2 rebounds and almost four assists a game, and we can only assume those numbers will get better as LeBron takes his time getting back to 100%.
LeBron out
The Lakers come back from the All-Star break needing every win they can from here on out. They begin the final stretch of the season in 9th place in the West, and will be without LeBron James coming out of the week long pause.
Warriors last game
The Warriors played the Jazz in their final game before the break and almost blew a 14 point fourth quarter lead. Klay Thompson came off the bench for the first time in almost a decade, and instead of sitting and sulking he came out and dropped 35 on 13/22 shooting. It looked like the Warriors were going to run away with the game in the second half, but Colin Sexton and Keyonte George combined for 68 points to bring the Jazz back in the game. George tied a rookie record with 9 threes and Sexton dished nine assists to make it a one point game with a half minute left. Lauri Markkanen had a chance to take the lead with a three pointer with 8 on the clock, John Collins got the offensive board, but threw his pass out of bounds and after two made Steph Curry FTs, Collin Sexton missed a step back three to tie the game as the clock ran out.
Lakers last game
The Lakers played the Jazz right before the All-Star Break, and they did so without LeBron James. Without the league’s all-time leading scorer, it was up to Anthony Davis to carry the load in Utah. While Davis did the dirty work down low it was D’Angelo Russell who orchestrated the offense dishing 17 assists. The game was tight at halftime, but the Lakers came out and starched the lead to 23 after the break and cruised into the All-Star Weekend with a 138-122 win.
We are live from Chase Center
Hello everyone and welcome to the Bay Area where the Golden State Warriors are back from the break looking to sort things out after a rough first 50+ games. On top of injuries, aging, and Draymond Green suspensions there has been a bit of a changing of the guard in San Fran which has made for a bumpy ride up until this point. They were one of the hottest teams going into the break, and will look to keep their good run of form alive agains the LA Lakers, who are in a very similar situation. LeBron James isn’t 25 anymore, and Anthony Davis is still a dominant big man but both have been suffering injuries as Darvin Hamm tries to maneuver the roster to try to find the best squad for the rest of the season.
