This fall, the documentary “The Redeem Team,” which is based on the men’s basketball team that represented the United States in the 2008 Olympics, will debut on Netflix. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade will serve as executive producers for the film.

The premiere date for “The Redeem Team” has been set for October 7 and will be revealed by the streaming service on Friday. The film marks the first time that Netflix has worked together on a project with the International Olympic Committee.

Following the team’s disappointing bronze medal performance at the Olympic Games held in Athens in 2004, the documentary chronicles the team’s attempt to redeem themselves by winning gold at the Olympic Games held in Beijing by including behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the players and coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Who was ”The Redeem Team”?

Kobe Bryant served as the team’s captain on the 2008 squad, which also featured LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, and Carmelo Anthony. In the game for the gold medal, the team, whose name was a homage to the legendary “Dream Team” of 1992, prevailed over Spain.

Dwayne Wade commented on that, “In 2008, I played with heroes of mine, all stars, friends and future teammates. Outside of winning and showing the world that we were still the most dominant, our other big challenge was changing the perception of what everyone thought about the NBA and USA Basketball! I’m excited for everyone to get an opportunity to go behind the scenes and see all the work that went into this iconic team — The Redeem Team!”

Jon Weinbach, who produced “The Last Dance,” a Netflix documentary series premiere in 2020 and focused on Michael Jordan’s final season playing for the Chicago Bulls, is the director of “The Redeem Team.”
