LeBron James drops out of the ‘Las Vegas’ NBA project

Although a few years ago, LeBron James expressed his desire to buy an NBA franchise, especially Las Vegas, he changed his mind.

Nearly four years ago, LeBron James made it clear he was eager to become a part‑owner of a future NBA expansion team in Las Vegas. But as time has passed, that excitement seems to have faded — and now it’s increasingly unlikely the Lakers star will be involved with Nevada’s potential new franchise.

After dropping 30 points in the Lakers’ 124–116 win over the Houston Rockets, James was asked about his long‑term interest in owning an NBA team. His answer surprised many: he’s no longer pursuing that dream.

So what changed? According to The Athletic, Fenway Sports Group — owners of the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool, and the investment group James is partnered with — is no longer interested in backing a Las Vegas NBA bid. LeBron was expected to rely on Fenway’s financial muscle to make his ownership ambitions possible.

Because of that shift, sources told The New York Times that “since Fenway is no longer pursuing NBA ownership, it’s far less likely LeBron will chase a team of his own.”

How much is LeBron James worth?

Forbes estimates LeBron’s net worth at $1.4 billion, but even with that fortune, he’d still need a group of investors to realistically compete for an expansion franchise.

There’s another hurdle: NBA rules require him to retire before he can join an ownership group. And despite being 41, LeBron hasn’t made that call yet — he could still return for the 2026–27 season.

Back in 2017, LeBron openly talked about his dream of owning a team, saying, “I think it would be great. I’d still be part of the game and I’d be able to put people in positions of power. I’ve always loved that — giving people the chance to make an impact and make things happen.” Today, the landscape looks very different.

On Monday, the NBA announced that during the Board of Governors meetings scheduled for March 24 and 25 (Eastern Time), owners will vote on whether to move forward with expansion teams in Las Vegas and Seattle.
