LeBron James showed up 3 hours early again - and it explains everything about his playoff longevity

As the Los Angeles Lakers look to surge past the OKC Thunder, their star, LeBron James, is showing up and preparing well.

Update:

It’s the second round of the NBA Playoffs and the stakes are high. And as usual, LeBron James is showing up hours before anyone else.

Ahead of Game 2 against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the 41-year-old arrived at the arena roughly three hours before tipoff, long before most teammates, and even earlier than many coaches. For LeBron, that’s just routine.

LeBron’s extensive pre-game routine

A year ago, LeBron pulled back the curtain on his famously intense pregame preparation, explaining that he often arrives as much as five hours before games.

“There’s no wasted time,” he said, describing a tightly structured routine that includes weight training, on-court work, recovery treatment, film study, and nutrition, all before the game even starts.

At this stage of his career, LeBron is relying on precision. Every minute before tipoff serves a purpose - Activating his body to avoid injury, getting extra reps on the court, recovering before the game even begins, and mentally preparing through film and scouting.

It’s a system built for longevity, and it’s one of the biggest reasons he’s still producing deep into the playoffs. While younger players may rely on energy, LeBron relies on preparation.

A subtle edge in a playoff series

Against a younger, faster Oklahoma City Thunder team, that preparation could be the difference. The Thunder bring pace, athleticism, and depth. LeBron brings control.

Showing up hours early is about slowing the game down before it even begins. By the time tipoff arrives, he’s already gone through multiple workouts, studied matchups, and put his body through recovery cycles. In many ways, he’s already played the game once in his head.

In Year 23, most players would be scaling back. Managing minutes. Cutting corners where they can. LeBron has done the opposite. Even now, in the middle of another playoff run, he’s doubling down on the same habits that built his career.
