LeBron James to surpass Derek Fisher’s NBA playoff record

The Los Angeles Lakers now know their opponent for the 2025 NBA playoffs: they’ll face off against the Minnesota Timberwolves, led by Anthony Edwards.

The Lakers are already quite familiar with Edwards and his squad, having met them four times this season. Their recent postseason history also adds another layer of intrigue to this matchup.

The Lakers and Timberwolves regular season clashes

The Lakers and Timberwolves split their regular-season matchups, each securing two wins. The Lakers took a 111-102 victory on February 27, 2025, while the Timberwolves claimed a 97-87 win on December 13, 2024. Earlier in the season, Minnesota dominated with a 109-80 win on December 2, 2024, but Los Angeles started strong with a 110-103 victory back on October 22, 2024.

LeBron James is set to make history once again—not just by adding to his growing list of records and milestones, but also by facing a new playoff opponent. His matchup against the Timberwolves marks the 24th different team he’s battled in the postseason.

James will overtake the previous record holder, Derek Fisher, who faced 23 different teams in 259 postseason games between 1997 and 2014.

The six teams that King James has never faced in the playoffs include his original team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, along with his current one, the Lakers, the Clippers, the Sacramento Kings, the Utah Jazz, and the New Orleans Pelicans.
