Update:

The NBA’s 24‑hour news cycle exploded this week when ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith delivered a brutal critique aimed at Zion Williamson of the New Orleans Pelicans, triggering a rare show of support from none other than LeBron James.

Smith’s comments spark outrage

On First Take earlier this week, Smith went beyond typical performance commentary, instead targeting Williamson’s eating habits and physical conditioning. In a segment that quickly ignited backlash, Smith claimed:

“You got people that are alcoholics, you got people that are drug addicts and stuff like that… What was Zion’s problem? Food! Food addict! Everybody in New Orleans that cooked knew about Zion Williamson… literally had rumors he got busted hiding food under his bed.”

Many view these comments as a personal attack on Williamson’s character, especially given the context of his well‑documented history with injuries and weight‑related scrutiny. It marked one of Smith’s most intense public criticisms of the 25‑year‑old star.

The Pelicans organization didn’t stay quiet. The team’s official social media account responded by posting a trolling video of Smith’s numerous sports bloopers and writing “Stick to solitaire, Stephen”, referencing a viral moment in which Smith was caught playing the card game during a live NBA broadcast.

Smith fired back on social media, promising a rebuttal on the next episode of First Take, and the feud escalated into one of the season’s most talked‑about media controversies.

Enter LeBron: Veteran shows support

Then came the moment that shifted the narrative from media smack talk to player solidarity. After the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Pelicans by a 110‑101 score, cameras caught James and Williamson in a postgame exchange that quickly became one of the hottest clips of the day.

While the precise wording hasn’t been officially confirmed by the NBA’s audio feed, lip‑readers and multiple fan accounts interpreted LeBron’s message to Zion as supportive, essentially telling him to ignore the media noise surrounding Smith’s comments.

Observers interpreted James’ advice along the lines of, “Don’t mind all that bullshit about Stephen A”, and video from fan accounts shows Zion nodding, embracing James, and visibly appreciating the moment.

Whether or not those were the literal words, the intent was unmistakable. LeBron, the league veteran, was helping a younger star navigate criticism.

Stephen A. vs Zion isn’t new. Smith’s comments on Zion’s eating habits and condition have popped up periodically over the past few seasons, with critics calling the focus on weight both outdated and unprofessional. LeBron and Smith have a public history as well. In the past LeBron confronted Smith after the analyst criticized his son, Bronny James, showing this isn’t the first time James has taken issue with Smith’s commentary.
