Update:

When the Los Angeles Lakers acquired Luke Kennard midseason, the expectation was clear: Shoot. That’s exactly why he was on the floor with the game on the line Saturday night, and exactly why the Lakers trusted him in the clutch moment.

Kennard delivered in the most emphatic way possible, knocking down a last-second three-pointer to lift the Lakers to a 105-104 win over the Orlando Magic and extend their winning streak to nine games.

“They brought me here to shoot”

Since arriving in Los Angeles, Kennard has been adjusting to a new system, new teammates and a clearly defined responsibility. The Lakers didn’t bring him in to dominate the ball or create offense. They brought him in to space the floor and make shots when it matters most. Late in Saturday’s game, that role came into focus.

“They brought me here for a reason, and that was to shoot,” Kennard said after the game. “And it feels good. Feels good the way that everybody reacted, obviously.”

After a chaotic final sequence, the Lakers found themselves with one last chance. The play wasn’t necessarily designed for Kennard, but it didn’t matter. As the defense shifted, he ended up wide open on the wing, the exact scenario Los Angeles envisioned when it added one of the league’s best shooters.

Moments like that don’t happen without belief from the people around you. LeBron James, who made history earlier in the night by becoming the NBA’s all-time leader in games played, didn’t hesitate when the ball found Kennard. Neither did head coach JJ Redick, a former elite shooter himself who understands the mindset required in those situations.

Even amid a recent shooting slump, the message to Kennard remained the same, to keep shooting. That confidence paid off in the biggest way.

The Lakers’ recent surge - now nine straight wins - has been driven not just by star power, but by role players stepping into moments like this. Kennard’s game-winner is the latest example of a team that knows exactly who it is. In tight games, they don’t panic. They trust their system, trust their spacing, and trust the players brought in to execute specific roles. And on this night, that role belonged to Kennard.

As the playoffs approach, these are the kinds of moments that define rotations and trust. Saturday night was just one game in March, but it showed exactly why Luke Kennard is in Los Angeles and why he could play a crucial role in what comes next.
