Update:

Mac McClung has only played a handful of games in the greatest basketball league in the world but has a unique opportunity to make history by achieving a feat that some of the NBA’s legendary stars couldn’t.

At the Chase Center, the 26-year-old Osceola Magic guard will pit himself against Matas Buzelis, Stephon Castle and Andre Jackson Jr. in this year’s NBA All-Star Slam Dunk Contest.

McClung pipped Jaylen Brown to the crown, scoring 98.8 in the 2024 All-Star weekend, becoming the fifth player to repeat as champion.

Michael Jordan, the first to win consecutive slam dunk contests

While several players have won the dunk contest more than once: (Harold Miner: 1993, 1995 and Dominique Wilkins: 1985, 1990), only a handful have won back-to-back contests: Michael Jordan was the first, winning the 1987 and 1988 editions.

Jason Richardson was the next to achieve consecutive wins, after being crowned champion in 2002 and 2003.

Nate Robinson did it at the second attempt in 2009 and 2010 - and became the first player to win the contest three times. His first title was in 2006 but he finished third behind Gerald Green and Dwight Howard the following year in Las Vegas.

NBA Slam Dunk Contest back-to-back winners

  • Michael Jordan: 1987, 1988
  • Jason Richardson: 2002, 2003
  • Nate Robinson: 2009, 2010
  • Zach LaVine: 2015, 2016
  • Mac McClung: 2023, 2024

Zach LaVine became the fourth player to win successive contests win 2015 and 2016 when the voting system returned to replace the ‘battle’ format.

And Mac McClung won the last two, meaning that he is now going for three in a row. We’ll see what he has up his sleeve at Chase Center tonight.

The AT&T Slam Dunk is the third event on this evening’s program, with the first scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
