Mavericks star Anthony Davis undergoes surgery: Will he be fit for Dallas preseason?

So far the Dallas Mavericks have not seen much of Anthony Davis and he has been forced to undergo surgery in the offseason.

On Tuesday ESPN reported that Davis has received surgery to repair a detached retina in his eye. The injury was sustained during the 2024/25 regular season.

Only limited details about the issue have so far been made public but it is thought that Davis will be able to take part in team activities once the training camp begins ahead of the 2025/26 season. Now 32, Davis will be tasked with leading this new-look Dallas team into a new era.

His time in Dallas started successfully with a stunning debut against the Houston Rockets, putting up 26 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists in a 116-105 win. But things swiftly went downhill from there as he strained a left adductor during the game, going on to miss the next 18 games.

Davis arrived with the Mavericks as part of the shock trade that saw talisman Luka Doncic move to the Lakers. Without Davis available the team suffered a drop-off and failed to make the playoffs as the new star managed just 11 appearances in three months.

It remains to be seen how the Mavericks will line up next season but you can be sure that Davis will play a key role. Not only has Doncic left, but star point guard Kyrie Irving looks set to miss a lot of the season as he recovers from a serious ACL injury.

However the Mavericks do have No. 1 draft pick Cooper Flagg to introduce into the team and he will be expected to contribute from the start. With so much change at the Mavericks in the past six months, head coach Jason Kidd will need experienced voices like Davis to step up for the team.
