The Miami Heat took a stand against gun violence before the start of their Game 5 matchup with the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals, joining others who have expressed outrage at the recent mass shooting in Texas.

There was a moment of silence held for the victims of the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas that killed 19 children and two adults.

Heat call for gun law reform

The Heat didn’t stop at just having the silent pregame tribute for those who were killed. The announcer at the game then encouraged the audience and viewers to call their lawmakers and demand that they pass legislation that could help prevent such tragedies.

“The Heat urges you to contact your state senators by calling 202-224-3121 to leave a message demanding their support for common sense gun laws,” said the announcer.

They flashed the number on the screen, as well as instructions on how to register to vote.

The announcement got a cheer from the crowd, indicating that they were in agreement with the message that more ought to be done to fight gun violence. More children have died from gunshot wounds at school than police officers have in the line of duty.
