Miles Bridges pleads no contest to domestic violence charge: What does it mean?

Charlotte Hornets restricted free agent Miles Bridges has pleaded no contest to charges of domestic violence, and will be put on three years of probation.

Update:
Charlotte Hornets forward Miles Bridges has been charged with domestic violence after physically harming a woman on Wednesday and turning himself into LAPD.

Charlotte Hornets restricted free agent Miles Bridges has pleaded no contest to a felony charge of domestic violence after being accused of assaulting his former partner in front of their two children earlier this year.

The Los Angeles Superior Court sentenced him to three years of probation with no jail time. A “no contest” plea means that Bridges is accepting the sentence without formally admitting that he is guilty.

He had also been charged with two counts of felony for child abuse “in circumstances likely to cause great bodily injury or death”, but these were dismissed as part of his deal with prosecutors, and with the agreement of his ex-partner.

Other requirements for Bridges

On top of his probation, he will also have to comply with other conditions, which include undergoing 52 weeks of counseling for domestic violence and 52 weeks of parenting classes, putting in 100 hours of community service, and undergoing weekly drug tests, with doctor-prescribed marijuana allowed.

The 24-year-old will also not be allowed to own guns or any dangerous weapons, pay a restitution fine of $300 and a domestic violence fine of $500, and follow a 10-year protective order which requires him to stay 100 yards away from his ex and have no contact with her.

What’s next for Bridges in the NBA?

Bridges is not signed with any team at the moment, but under the collective bargaining agreement, the NBA would have the right to impose penalties on him including dismissal from the league, if a team were to offer him a contract.

Both the NBA and the Hornets say that they are continuing to investigate the matter.

Bridges was chosen 12th overall in the 2018 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, but was immediately traded to the Hornets, with whom he has played since.
