Update:

The NBA, in partnership with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), will begin reaching out to potential teams and ownership groups in January as it takes the first steps toward launching a professional men’s basketball league in Europe.

The announcement confirms that both organizations will move forward with a joint analysis of the league, which aims to integrate top European clubs into a new competition while respecting the continent’s existing basketball ecosystem.

Pathways for European clubs

The new league will feature permanent spots for select teams while also providing an annual qualification route for clubs from FIBA-affiliated national leagues. Teams could earn entry through the FIBA Basketball Champions League or via an end-of-season qualifying tournament. The competition will align its calendar with domestic leagues and national team schedules, allowing players to represent both their clubs and national teams throughout the year.

Investment in European basketball

Beyond the league itself, the NBA and FIBA plan to invest financial support and resources into developing Europe’s basketball ecosystem. This includes national leagues, club academies, and existing NBA and FIBA programs that cultivate players, coaches, and referees at every level.

A boost for European basketball

“Advancing this joint project between the NBA and FIBA is excellent news for the European basketball community,” said FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis. “The league format respects the principles of European sports, giving ambitious clubs a clear path to the top. The project is designed to enhance sustainability across Europe’s basketball ecosystem, benefiting players, clubs, leagues, and national federations, and ultimately creating a positive impact for fans across the continent.”

NBA sees major potential in Europe

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver added, “Our conversations with various stakeholders in Europe have reinforced our belief that there is a huge opportunity to create a new league on the continent. Together with FIBA, we look forward to engaging with clubs and ownership groups that share our vision for basketball’s potential in Europe.”

NBA and FIBA said they will provide further updates in the coming months.
