Update:

The NBA is taking a serious look at Las Vegas as a potential destination for expansion, with a Board of Governors vote scheduled for March 24-25 to explore the feasibility of adding a team for the 2028-29 season, sources tell ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The case for Las Vegas NBA expansion: market, fans, and money

Las Vegas has transformed into one of the fastest-growing sports cities in the country, thanks in large part to its successes in the NHL and NFL. The Vegas Golden Knights became an instant hockey powerhouse, while the Raiders’ relocation brought professional football back to the city. This combination of established fan bases and a growing local economy has made Vegas a compelling case for the NBA.

Market and infrastructure advantages

  • Tourism: Vegas attracts more than 40 million visitors annually, giving the league a built-in audience for games and events.
  • Arena access: Allegiant Stadium and T-Mobile Arena show that Las Vegas has world-class facilities capable of hosting high-profile sporting events.
  • Corporate support: The city has strong local sponsorship opportunities, particularly from casinos, tech, and entertainment sectors.

Potential challenges

While the market is attractive, the league must consider travel logistics, team relocation concerns, and regional competition for fan attention. Still, league insiders say momentum is growing, and stakeholders are optimistic that a Las Vegas team could be a reality if expansion is approved.

What comes next?

The first vote in late March will allow the NBA to explore purchase processes and ownership groups. A potential final vote later in 2026 would confirm expansion if at least 23 of 30 governors vote in favor.

Las Vegas could join Seattle as the first NBA expansion cities in nearly two decades, bringing the league to 32 teams and opening a new chapter for professional basketball in North America.
