Update:

The NBA MVP race is entering its final stretch, with just a few weeks left in the regular season and several stars still making their case for the league’s top individual honor.

While the field has narrowed in recent weeks, the race is far from decided, and performance down the final stretch could ultimately determine who takes home the award.

NBA MVP 2026: The current frontrunner

Right now, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has emerged as the leading candidate. The Oklahoma City Thunder guard has put together a dominant season, combining elite scoring with consistent efficiency while leading his team to one of the best records in the league.

Team success has historically been a major factor in MVP voting, and that has worked strongly in his favor.

The main challenger

As always, Nikola Jokić remains a contender. The Denver Nuggets star continues to produce at an extraordinary level, filling the stat sheet nightly and anchoring one of the league’s most consistent teams.

Jokić’s case is built on his all-around impact - scoring, playmaking and efficiency - which has already earned him multiple MVP awards in recent years.

Other names in the mix

Beyond the top two, several players have had stretches that kept them in the race. Victor Wembanyama has generated attention with his unique two-way impact, while others around the league have put together strong statistical seasons.

However, consistency, team success, and availability have made it difficult for the broader field to seriously challenge the frontrunners.

The role of the 65-game rule

One of the biggest factors shaping this year’s race is the NBA’s 65-game minimum for award eligibility. The rule has placed added importance on durability, with players needing to stay on the court to remain in contention.

Late-season absences can be particularly damaging, as they not only risk disqualification but also shift momentum to other candidates. Injuries are once again influencing the race.

Cade Cunningham had been gaining traction as an MVP contender while leading the Detroit Pistons to the top of the Eastern Conference, but his recent injury could impact both his eligibility and his standing in the race. Situations like that highlight how quickly the MVP picture can change at this stage of the season.

What will decide the MVP?

With the regular season winding down, the race will likely come down to a few key factors:

  • Team success - top seeds tend to produce MVP winners
  • Statistical dominance - scoring, efficiency and overall impact
  • Availability - meeting the 65-game threshold
  • Momentum - strong performances in the final weeks

The 2026 MVP race is shaping up to be a battle between elite production and consistency. While Shai Gilgeous-Alexander currently holds the edge, Nikola Jokić and others remain within striking distance. With time still left in the season, the award is not yet decided, but every game from here on out will carry significant weight.
