Update:

The NBA playoff race is entering a decisive stretch, and one team has already secured its place.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have officially clinched a top-six seed in the Western Conference after extending their winning streak to nine games. That guarantees them a spot in the postseason and, crucially, keeps them out of the play-in tournament.

As the standings continue to evolve, the full playoff picture across both conferences is starting to come into focus.

Thunder lead a competitive Western Conference

Oklahoma City has been the class of the West all season and currently sits comfortably in first place with one of the league’s best records. Behind them, the race is far from settled. The San Antonio Spurs remain within striking distance in second, while the Los Angeles Lakers have surged into third thanks to strong recent form.

The middle of the Western Conference is especially tight, with the Houston Rockets, Denver Nuggets, and Minnesota Timberwolves all clustered together and battling for playoff positioning. Finishing in the top six is critical, as it guarantees direct entry into the playoffs.

Meanwhile, teams like the Phoenix Suns, LA Clippers, and Golden State Warriors are currently in the play-in range, where a single game could determine their postseason fate.

Eastern Conference led by surprising contender

Over in the East, the Detroit Pistons have emerged as the top team in the conference, holding the best record and positioning themselves for the No. 1 seed.

Close behind are the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks, both of whom remain firmly in contention for the top spot.

The playoff race tightens further down the standings, with teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers, Toronto Raptors, and Orlando Magic currently occupying solid playoff positions but still needing strong finishes to secure favorable seeding.

Just below them, the play-in zone remains crowded. The Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks, and Philadelphia 76ers are all fighting to either climb into the top six or avoid elimination scenarios.

Which teams have clinched?

At this stage, the Thunder are the only team to have officially clinched a guaranteed playoff spot by locking in a top-six finish in their conference.

Several other teams are close to doing the same, particularly in the Western Conference, but with multiple games still to be played, no other positions are mathematically secured yet.

The importance of the play-in tournament

The NBA’s play-in format adds another layer of drama to the standings. Teams that finish 7th through 10th in each conference must compete in a mini-tournament to earn the final two playoff spots. That means even teams with strong regular seasons can see their postseason hopes hinge on one or two games.

Because of that, the race to finish in the top six like Oklahoma City just did is one of the most important battles in the standings.

What to watch next

With the regular season entering its final stretch, the focus now shifts to seeding battles and potential matchups. More teams are expected to clinch playoff spots soon, but the order of the standings and the paths teams will face in the postseason remains very much in flux.

For now, the Thunder have made their statement. The rest of the league is still chasing.
